The India vs Pakistan cricket matches are not just matches between players from two nations. It is a matter of prestige to the associated cricket boards and a matter of large-scale revenue for all the concerned sponsors, broadcasters and also the ICC, who are responsible for arranging these tournaments.

Both the nations of India and Pakistan have a very large fanbase of compassionate fans who often travel to any part of the world to cheer for their favourite team. This leads to the ICC gathering immense revenues from the match, and if such matches are affected, then the entire financial backbone of the board faces sheer turbulence.

India and Pakistan matches hold further significance among rivalries since these two teams have not featured in bilaterals for over a decade now. They play against each other only in multi-nation tournaments like the Asia Cup or the ICC Cricket World Cup.

Pakistan government reverses boycott decision ahead of India clash

After immense persuasion and requests from several cricket boards, the President of Sri Lanka and the BCB Chief, the Pakistan government finally allowed their team to go ahead and play against India in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

They claimed that the decision was made citing ICC atrocities against Bangladesh; however, Bangladesh thanked the PCB, their chief Mohsin Naqvi, the Pakistan fans and all for their remarkable sportsmanship and their extensive support for Bangladesh during this period.

While the SLC President and the Chief of the Emirates Cricket Board had already written to the PCB officially asking them to not boycott the game, the Pakistani government, following a discussion with Sri Lanka Cricket, BCB, PCB and the ICC, agreed to the scheduled game.

Even the Sri Lankan President, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, held a telephonic conversation with the Pakistan Prime Minister, where they recalled how these two have always stood shoulder to shoulder during each other's tough times. All this led to Pakistan changing their decision.

ICC saved from a loss of $174 million by Pakistan's approval

This is an open secret that India-Pakistan games bear a massive amount of revenue to the people associated with the financial dealings, as well as the ICC. Had this boycott been executed, ICC would have faced massive financial carnage.

The Pakistani government's decision to cancel the boycott helped the ICC prevent a massive $174 million revenue loss, which could have shattered their profits from this tournament.

“The cumulative loss would have been around $174 million dollars, including those related to broadcasters, gate money and other sponsorships,” an Indian Express report stated. Minutes after the game was given a green signal, the flight prices for the Mumbai-Colombo-Mumbai round trip have made a huge surge, that is, from INR 10000 to INR 60000.

Pakistan's remaining schedule in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026

Pakistan have just played one game in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. They defeated the Netherlands by a narrow margin of 3 wickets in their opening game and will clash against rivals USA in their second. The game is a highly anticipated contest, especially because the USA had defeated them in the last World Cup.

Pakistan will then play their next game against India in the much-anticipated contest on the 15th of February, which is a Sunday. Their last game of the tournament will be against Namibia. Hence, Pakistan can play the India game with a free mind if they defeat the USA in the second game of their campaign.
