Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli heaped praise on Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, hailing him as a ‘freak.’ Virat Kohli’s statement came in response to Glenn Maxwell’s exceptional batting performance against Afghanistan during the ICC World Cup 2023.

The Pat Cummins-led team registered a three-wicket victory over Afghanistan in a thrilling encounter at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday, November 7. The Australian team successfully chased down the target of 292 runs with more than three overs to spare.

The five-time world champions found themselves in dire straits at 49/4 when Maxwell entered the crease. The Australian team’s situation worsened as they lost wickets at regular intervals. They were on the brink of a humiliating defeat at one stage, with a score of 91/7.

However, Maxwell delivered a remarkable knock, rescuing Australia from a challenging situation. He played an unbeaten 201 off 128 balls, featuring 21 boundaries and 10 sixes, despite physical discomfort. He added an unbeaten 203-run partnership with Pat Cummins.

Glenn Maxwell’s remarkable innings received widespread acclaim, including praise from Virat Kohli, who played with Maxwell in the IPL for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Kohli acknowledged that only Maxwell could deliver such an extraordinary performance.

“Only you could do this. Freak,” Virat Kohli wrote on his Instagram story.

The 35-year-old scored his second century in the event, having previously made the fastest century in World Cup history against the Netherlands. He is the leading run-getter for Australia, amassing 397 runs with an impressive average of 79.40 and a strike rate of 152.69.

During the post-match presentation, Maxwell expressed his delight in capitalizing on the opportunities despite some chances during his innings. He acknowledged that it wasn’t a completely chanceless performance.

“It would have been nice if it was a chanceless knock, but I had my chances, to make the most of it tonight was something I can be proud of,” Maxwell said.

Australia became the third team to advance to the semi-finals of the ongoing tournament. They will take on Bangladesh in their match at the MCA Stadium in Pune on Saturday, November 11.
