Amid the ongoing series against the Aussies, which marks a preparatory phase for the high-stakes ICC Women's T20 World Cup tournament to be held in England in 2026, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur has sustained a massive injury scare that might have a toll on her chances for the World Cup as well.
Indian women are currently on their tour to Australia and are playing a twin three-match white-ball series against the most successful team in the history of Women's World Cups. After a successful T20I leg of the series, where India secured a 2-1 victory over the giants of the game, they are now in for the ODIs.
Harmanpreet Kaur's massive injury scare amid India vs Australia game
India opted to bat first after Harmanpreet won the toss against the Aussies. This marks the final series for Alyssa Healy, the Australia captain, before she calls quits on her international career. Also, this is the first time India is playing against Australia after having won the World Cup in 2025.
While Harmanpreet Kaur was batting during the first innings, she injured her left knee with a massive blow. She has not taken the field during the second innings, and the BCCI Medical team is currently monitoring her, as revealed by the updates on the BCCI Women's official X page.
"Captain Harmanpreet Kaur has not taken the field in the second innings after sustaining an injury to her left knee while batting. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring her progress. Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana is leading the side in her absence," BCCI stated.

Harmanpreet Kaur stabilized India through the middle overs with a half-century
India are playing these white-ball matches in order to deck up a combination suitable for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup, which will be held within the next few months in England. The start of their series was on a high note with a confident triumph in the shortest format of the game.
However, as India struggled to keep up their reputation as the World Champions, the entire top order collapsed miserably despite Smriti Mandhana's half-century; someone had to play a face-saving innings in those middle overs.
The captain took guard after Smriti's dismissal, and alongside cameo partnerships with Richa Ghosh and Kashvee Gautam, she set the stage for a fightback for the Women in Blue as they went past the 200-run mark.
World Champions struggle under Aussie conditions, fail to bat for 50 overs
This series marks the Women in Blues' first campaign overseas after being crowned the champions of the ICC Women's ODI World Cup played in India in 2025. However, on their very first tour, where they had something to prove outside of the home advantage, they have struggled to keep up with the flow.
They failed to play through their 50 overs of their innings and were bowled out for just 214 runs, with 9 balls still remaining in their innings. The defending of such a small total against the powerful batting unit now depends on the Indian bowlers.
Also, it marks Alyssa Healy's final series before retirement, and hence, the Aussies would also want to give her a winning farewell. She made the announcement and Sophie Molineux was also named the captain of the Australian side.
