21-year-old leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi has risen in the Indian cricket scene in the last two years, first thanks to an amazing performance in the ICC U19 World Cup 2020 in South Africa and then for the Indian Premier League franchise Punjab Kings in the IPL 2020 and IPL 2021. This has led to his father Mangilal saying that he is glad he listened to his son’s coaches and let him pursue cricket.

After impressing one and all with his bowling the Indian Premier League, Ravi Bishnoi was surprisingly picked ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction and drafted by Lucknow Super Giants into their team, along with KL Rahul, and Australia’s Marcus Stoinis.

And all of this led to Bishnoi being picked for the Indian team for the West Indies T20Is and on his debut on February 16, he recorded remarkable figures of 4-0-17-2 that also earned him the Man of the Match award at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

His father Mangilal, who is teacher in the government school, told Times of India: “Poora ghar bhar gaya tha (the entire house was full with guests). Together we all watched Ravi bowl. It was such a wonderful night and to see my son in an India jersey was a very proud moment.”

“I wanted him to prioritize studies so that he could get a decent job. We are a middle-class family and I never wanted to risk his future. It’s a rural background we come from, but I ensured he went to an English medium school,” said the father.

His Coaches, Pradyot Singh Rathore And Shahrukh Pathan, Convinced Me To Let Ravi Focus On Cricket: Ravi Bishnoi’s Father

Plans did not fall in place and Ravi, not interested in books, devoted most of his time to playing cricket. This led to his coaches Pradyot Singh Rathore and Shahrukh Pathan at the Jodhpur’s Spartans Academy, talking to his father and somehow pursuing him to let Ravi concentrate on cricket.

“He was doing poorly at school and I used to get calls from teachers complaining about his performance. I tried hard to convince him to focus on studies, but it was he and his coaches, Pradyot Singh Rathore and Shahrukh Pathan, who eventually ended up convincing me to let him play the sport. I am glad, I let him follow his passion,” Mangilal said.

Ravi Bishnoi will be paid INR 4 crores by Lucknow Super Giants and a successful debut for India has opened up more avenues for the leg-spinner who has just started to show his skills.
