Former Team India captain Sourav Ganguly has broken his silence over the death threats he and his wife, Dona Ganguly, recently received. Sourav confirmed that the phone number linked to the threats originated from Kolkata and said he has involved the local police to investigate the matter.
Threatening letters had reportedly been sent in Ganguly’s name for around six months before his office received two serious threats on Monday. His manager later filed a complaint at the Thakurpukur Police Station in south Kolkata, prompting police to identify the sender and investigate the motive.
Sourav Ganguly Breaks Silence on Death Threats
Sourav Ganguly addressed the matter publicly on Friday after his office received two threatening letters on Monday. The earlier letters had reportedly arrived for around six months, but the latest messages contained explicit threats against him, his wife Dona Ganguly and people close to them.
"We have reported it to the police. I am sure the police will sort it out. The number is from here, Kolkata. Hopefully, the police will do the needful. I have security,"
His manager filed a complaint at the Thakurpukur Police Station in south Kolkata after the latest letters reached his office. Kolkata Police have since begun investigating the communications and trying to establish who sent them.
Kolkata Police Track Courier Trail and Mobile Number
Police are examining the contents of the letters, their source and the courier route used to send them. Preliminary findings suggest that a person from Belgharia in North 24 Parganas may have used a courier service to deliver the letters.
A senior police officer said investigators have also contacted the courier agency and traced a mobile number allegedly linked to the sender. They are checking the movement of the SIM card and trying to determine whether the same person sent all the threatening letters.
"We have spoken to people from the courier service and tracked down one mobile number. We are trying to locate it," he said.
The police are also working to establish the motive behind the threats. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities examine the available evidence and statements connected to the case.
Sourav Ganguly's Cricket Career and Legacy
Sourav Ganguly retired from international cricket in 2008 after a 16-year career with India. The left-hander finished with 11,363 runs in 311 ODIs at an average of 41.02, including 22 centuries and 72 half-centuries. In Tests, he scored 7,212 runs in 113 matches at an average of 42.17, with 16 centuries and 35 fifties.
Ganguly made his ODI debut in 1992 before becoming a regular member of the team in 1996. His Test debut came at Lord's in 1996, where he scored a century against England. Ganguly soon became an important part of the Indian side and later took over as captain during a difficult period for the team.
As India's captain, Ganguly led the team to the final of the 2003 ODI World Cup. He also guided India to the 2000 Champions Trophy final, while India shared the 2002 Champions Trophy with Sri Lanka. The southpaw finished his captaincy with 21 Test wins before MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli moved ahead of him.
Ganguly later moved into cricket administration and served as the BCCI president from 2019 to 2022. He currently serves as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal.
