"I Made A Wrong Gesture" - Gautam Gambhir Regrets Showing Middle Finger To Crowd During Asia Cup 2023

Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir opened up about his ‘middle finger’ controversy during the Asia Cup 2023. He admitted that he made a wrong gesture and he shouldn’t have done that.

Gautam Gambhir was part of the major controversy during the Asia Cup 2023. During the game between India and Nepal, a video of him went viral in which he was seen showing his middle finger. The commentator was walking towards the commentary box while talking on the phone.

As Gautam Gambhir walked past the crowd, they chanted “Kohli Kohli” and teased him.  The former Indian cricket reacted vigorously to it and showed the middle finger. However, later he clarified that the video was edited and the crowd raised anti-Indian slogans and he couldn’t tolerate it.

Gautam Gambhir talked about the same and admitted that it came in the heat of the moment. He said that everyone has their own way of reacting, but he shouldn’t have done that. Speaking on ANI Podcast, he explained:

“If I am going there and some fans point out and say ‘Hindustan Murdabad’ and they were told once by the security to not do it in the heat of the moment, I accept I made a wrong gesture, and sometimes when you hear these things, you react. 

“Everyone reacts differently; everyone has a different mindset. If someone doesn’t want to listen then you react, and I am accepting that I shouldn’t have made that gesture.”

Gautam Gambhir while further talking about the incident said that he has no problem with people chanting any individual’s name but he won’t stay shut when it comes to the nation. He lashed out at the media for portraying things in the wrong manner. He elaborated:

“People can chant anyone’s name, I don’t care, as I said, I don’t take fights personally. But yeah, when it comes to someone abusing my nation, 1 have the right to react anyway. I want probably in a more sensible way but things that have been written and spoken were wrong.”
