Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers shared his verdict on the debate related to Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli playing in the T20 World Cup 2024. He said that the duo would want to go there and win the tournament.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been completely sidelined from the Indian T20I setup after the T20 World Cup 2022. The duo hasn’t played a single game in the shortest format of the game for India since then as BCCI has given opportunities to youngsters.

With T20 World Cup 2024 around the corner, there are a lot of speculations about them playing in the tournament. Many experts and pundits have shared their opinion on the same and the latest to join the bandwagon is AB de Villiers.

Ab de Villiers pointed out that if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have a hunger to play in the tournament then they should definitely play. He pointed out that the T20 World Cup 2024 is a short tournament and the duo would want to play and win. Speaking in a video posted on his YouTube channel, he explained:

“We just have to see them there (Rohit & Virat). It’s all about their hunger. Do they have the hunger to go there and win the T20 World Cup? I think so. I cannot speak on their behalf but I think they will want to go there and win. T20 World Cup is a short tournament and you do set yourselves up to have another chance of winning a World Cup. So I do see them going there.”

There were reports which suggested that Rohit Sharma will be playing in the T20 World Cup 2024 and will even captain the team. He categorically told selectors to make the call on his future and BCCI wanted him to take the charge.

On the other hand, there were some other reports which suggested that Virat Kohli isn’t in plans for the tournament. The reports added that BCCI wants Ishan Kishan at No.3 in the tournament and they will soon contact the senior batter related to this. It remains to be seen what will be their future in the T20Is.

AB de Villiers further talked about Suryakumar Yadav leading the Indian team in the T20I series against South Africa. He was delighted with the development and said that it’ll be nice to see him lead the team. He elaborated:

“India captained by Suryakumar Yadav is quite a nice move, I like that. He is a bit of a 360 (degree) player. He thinks differently and is a bit creative. It will be nice to watch him lead his troops in South Africa.”

AB de Villiers also talked about the squads of India and South Africa for the upcoming T20I series. He highlighted that selectors of both the boards have selected young players to see how they handle pressure. He explained:

“What I liked about both squads was that the players have been rewarded for domestic performances. Indian squad has played who have done well in the IPL, and the South African squad has those who had a great SA20 season. The selectors have gone with these players to see how they handle the pressure with the T20 World Cup next year. Very excited.”

The first T20I between the two teams will be played on Sunday, December 10 at Kingsmead, Durban.
