Indian batter Shubman Gill opened up on his endurance after suffering a shin stress fracture last year in July. Gill was part of the Indian team that played the World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand in Southampton in June 2021.

The Indian opener made the scores of 28 & 8 in the inaugural WTC final, which India lost to the Black Caps by eight wickets. Gill was supposed to play the five-match Test series against England a couple of months after the WTC final.

However, the Punjab batter suffered a serious shin injury which ruled him out of the England Test series and took a couple of months to recover. Gill said that he would suffer grievous pain for 7-8 hours after the WTC final even before the injury was detected.

“I have come out of it entirely now. It endured a stress fracture on my shin when we played the World Test Championship final in England. About 2-3 days later, when the match ended, that night, I was in a lot of pain with my shin. I was in pain for almost 7-8 hours,” Gill told Sports Tak.

“I had no issues with my shin. I had never faced any problem with it whatsoever. It was quite shocking for me… to be in pain for 7-8 hours in the night. When I told the physio next day, they got an MRI done and that is where I found out that there’s a fracture in the shin,” he added.

Gill also revealed that he faced similar pain during the two-match Test series at home against New Zealand because of excessive fielding on the pitch in the first Test in Kanpur. Gill said he feels better after going through the rehabilitation process at the NCA in Bengaluru.

“After that, we went for the IPL and there weren’t too many fitness Tests so when we were playing Tests against New Zealand (in November-December last year), it reoccurred. In the first innings, there was quite a load while fielding for a long time, there wasn’t a Test match where we had to field for close to 130-140 overs, fielded almost for 2 days,” Gill said.

“Due to that, it began paining again. After that the physios decided that until and unless it completely heals, I won’t try to make a comeback. Else it will keep happening. I spent 2 months at the NCA and I am now completely pain free,” Gill added.

Gill will play for IPL debutants Gujarat Titans under Hardik Pandya’s leadership in IPL 2022. The team plays their first game against KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants on March 28.
