India National Cricket Team head coach Gautam Gambhir was at his fiery best in the press conference after the historic humiliation of the side in the home Test series against the South Africa National Cricket Team.
Temba Bavuma-led Proteas team stunned Team India in their own backyard in the recently concluded two-match Test series and registered a stunning 2-0 clean-sweep.
India suffer fresh humiliation
India built a fortress at home, and they were undefeatable in the Test series for a long time. Several dominant teams toured India during the 2012-23 period, only to suffer embarrassing losses.
From Australia to England to South Africa, every team struggled to beat India in the Test series, but things took an ugly turn in 2024 when New Zealand stunned Rohit Sharma & Co.
Under captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir, India faced a 0-3 whitewash at the hands of the New Zealand National Cricket Team. And now under the same head coach and the leaders, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant, India faced another whitewash at the hands of the Proteas.
India have lost five home Test matches in the 2024-25 period, which is the same number of Test matches that they lost during the long 2012-23 period at home.
Whatever decision we've taken, we've taken for the best interest of the team - Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir attended the press conference after the match, where he was asked whether he is the right man to continue as India's head coach in Test cricket.
Replying to this, Gautam Gambhir said that it is up to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to make a decision on his future. He said:
"There is, to be honest, there is no hindsight to sport. Whatever decision we've taken, we've taken for the best interest of the team and we absolutely believe that those were the right decisions which could get the job done for the country and for the team."
"And the second question, it is up to BCCI to decide. I've said it in my first press conference when I took over as the head coach. Indian cricket is important, I'm not important. And I sit here and say exactly the same thing."
I'm the same guy who got results in England - Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir is not a diplomatic man, as he didn't stop there and went on to remind the reporters of the success he has achieved since becoming the head coach.
He bluntly said that India performed well under his coaching in the five-match Test series in England, and they also won the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and Asia Cup 2025. He stated:
"And yes, people can keep forgetting about it. I'm the same guy who got results in England as well, with a young team. And I'm sure you guys will forget very soon because a lot of people keep talking about New Zealand.
"And I'm the same guy who won, under whom (India) won Champions Trophy and Asia Cup as well. Yes, this is a team that has less experience. And I've said it before as well, that they need to keep learning and they're putting everything possible to turn the tide."
