Legendary West Indies bowler and cricket expert Ian Bishop has expressed his shock over England’s struggles and their early exit from the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Ian Bishop called for Jos Buttler’s removal as England failed to deliver in the ICC events under his captaincy.
After a narrow eight-run defeat against Afghanistan, the England cricket team crashed out of the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Earlier, they also failed to reach the semifinals of the 2023 World Cup in India. Their failure in the last two ICC ODI events raised concerns about the team’s direction and questions about Jos Buttler's captaincy.
Ian Bishop shocked by England’s downfall, calls for leadership change
The West Indies legend said that he was stunned to see the downfall of England, as they are blessed with powerful batters like Harry Brook, Phil Salt, and Ben Duckett, along with the fiery pacers Jofra Archer and Mark Wood. Bishop admitted that England has the quality, but they are failing to harness it effectively.
Ian Bishop said on ICC after the England-Afghanistan match in Lahore: “I still struggle to believe that England are falling before the main hurdle of these ICC tournaments. With all of that batting talent and power hitters, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, Ben Duckett, and then Archer and Wood in their bowling attack, it is just shocking. It’s a pity that Mark Wood got injured. But they have to be a much better team than that.”
They're not harnessing it: Ian Bishop
England’s early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy has sparked debates about their white-ball leadership, with Jos Buttler facing scrutiny over his future. With England’s another early exit, Ian Bishop said that a leadership change might be the only option to get the team back on track. He feels a fresh approach to captaincy could help them regain their dominance in white-ball cricket.
The West Indies great further added, “So, I think there might be leadership questions now, given the history they've had from 2019. And that is all I think it is, because I think the quality is there, but they're not harnessing it. And that might just mean maybe another leadership.”
I’m not going to make any emotional decisions: Jos Buttler
Meanwhile, Jos Buttler has decided to take some time to reflect on his future as England’s captain after their early Champions Trophy 2025 exit. England will play their final match against South Africa on March 1 at the National Cricket Stadium in Karachi. With recent struggles in ODI cricket, Buttler is well aware that important decisions lie ahead about the team’s future.
Buttler said at the post-match presentation in Lahore, “I will take a little bit of time to just work out personally what I think is right. I’m not going to make any emotional decisions right here, right now."
