Ben Stokes’ future with the England national cricket team remains under concern as the investigation is still ongoing. Amid the clouds of uncertainty looming over Stokes’ career, England’s cricket legend Ian Botham has made some interesting comments on some of the recent controversies related to the team.

However, all of the recent controversies surrounding Ben Stokes and the England cricket team are linked to the cricketer’s drinking habits. Ian Botham has raised questions about that during a live discussion panel for the Stick to Cricket channel.

Ian Botham highlighted the Bristol controversy

The former cricketer stated that every cricketer would love to take a few moments for himself. But how and when, these are two factors that are against Stokes and the other English cricketers who had been under discussion for a long time after the Ashes 2025-26, where the home team, Australia, defeated the Three Lions by 4-1.

Taking an example from the days with Bristol, where Botham was the Chairman, Ben Stokes caught the headlines due to a highly publicized late-night brawl outside an Mbargo nightclub in September 2017. Stokes was arrested for the incident and went through a long investigation process. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) also took disciplinary actions against him.

The former cricketer mentions that they supported Stokes through the phase, but it is very difficult for someone to justify what happened outside the field.

“Some people just don't learn, do they? It's as simple as that. I mean, we as a club, when he had the problems in Bristol, and we stood by him, and I stood by him, the whole team, I was chairman then, everybody supported, but I really don't see how you can justify what happened after the game. Especially when you were probably very much in charge, who said curfew is midnight,” Ian Botham said.

Botham talked about The Ashes 2025-26

“And to me, we used to love going out for a drink, but we weren't quite so obvious. Australia just went down 2-0. What did the team do? Go to Noosa for five days,” he added.

ECB dropped Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson immediately from the team, ahead of the second Test match against New Zealand, and appointed Joe Root as their skipper, after the recent nightclub incident.

Ben Stokes to take retirement?

There are talks around the future of Stokes, whether he will retain his prestigious role in the national team. Botham has sheer doubt regarding that. While some reports are suggesting Stokes as captain again, Ian Botham does not think so, after all those incidents.

“I don't know where it'll go now. I just think that something's going to happen, whichever way it is. It wouldn't surprise me if Ben did lose the captaincy; he probably might walk away from the game. But I just don't know. But to be honest with you, it was an unnecessary procedure and one that I think he'll regret,” Botham reacted when he was asked about the possible future of the star all-rounder with the England cricket team.
