What was supposed to be a well-decorated, glittering event at Crown Melbourne's Palladium, the gracious 2026 Allan Border Medal was positioned as an ordinary event, thanks to Cricket Australia's planning.
The entire cricket fraternity, including the Australian cricket legend Ian Healy, lambasted the nation's cricket governing body for diluting the aura surrounding the event, which is directly linked with the cricket icon Allan Border.

Speaking on SENQ Breakfast, Ian Healy said the night lacked traditional efforts in all senses. The event named the Allan Border Medal was concluded without highlighting the greatness of Border, which annoyed Healy very much.
"It (the night) had good reason and justification to get hammered socially. To me, it lacked tradition in all formats. It needed a really strong video presentation of all sorts of eras that have gone before. It needed a strong reverence to Allan Border," Ian Healy told the media house.
Cricket Australia previously mentioned that they had to scrap the entire event because of the busy schedule in 2026 for both of their men's and women's cricket teams. Ahead of a high-octane Test series against Bangladesh, the cricket board somehow managed to arrange the event in a Brisbane function room.

The event was widely covered in the last couple of days not because of its overall weight and importance, but because of Travis Head, who was honored with the medal. Head became the fifth player to win the medal back-to-back.
Explaining Allen Border's importance in Australian cricket, Healy mentioned that the present generation loves to work and live with the greatness of the legendary captain who was later appointed as the official. From a regular player to captain and then an official, Border served Australian cricket for decades.
"I know for a fact that the current players just love the work of Allan Border and what he's done in the game. From becoming a legend player, to becoming an unwilling captain, to becoming a great captain, to being a selector, to being a board director. He's done a lot, and most of it as a volunteer. So, that reverence for AB was lacking," he added.

Healy referred to the fact that while the National Rugby League is positioning itself as a major sport across the globe with plans to advertise the game through aircraft, Cricket Australia arranged the night in a below-par approach. Ian Healy asked the cricket board to rethink before arranging such lackluster events.
"At a time when the NRL are considering leasing aircraft and hosting global rounds. We're putting on a sausage sizzle on a Friday night. That's not good enough. I don't care how short the night was and was going to be; it needed to be polished and very, very schmick. Australian cricket, you've got to get your act together," Healy said in the interview.
