Pakistan have been placed on high alert following intelligence reports warning of a potential terrorist attack during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Pakistan’s Intelligence Bureau issued the alert on Monday, cautioning security forces about the possible abduction of foreign guests attending the event.
This alert is a major blow to Pakistan, who have been working to restore international cricket in the country. Pakistan were unable to host international matches for over a decade following the 2009 terror attack on the Sri Lankan team. However, in recent years, the PCB has successfully hosted series with top teams.
Pakistan Face Terrorist Threat During ICC Champions Trophy 2025
According to the latest reports, Pakistan’s Intelligence Bureau warned of potential threats from extremist groups, including Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), ISIS, and Balochistan-based organizations. These groups are reportedly planning to abduct foreign nationals attending the ICC Champions Trophy.
"The sources revealed that the alert has been issued against several terror groups, including Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), ISIS, and other Balochistan-based outfits," Republic World reported.
Pakistan are hosting an ICC tournament for the first time in 29 years. India had already expressed concerns about safety in Pakistan and refused to play there. The ICC agreed to a hybrid model where India's matches will be held in Dubai. Meanwhile, security measures in Pakistan have been heightened.
Afghanistan’s Intelligence Agency Issues Warnings About Potential ISKP Attacks
According to intelligence reports, ISKP (Islamic State – Khorasan Province) is planning to rent properties in city areas without CCTV surveillance to use as safe houses. These locations, often accessible only by rickshaw or motorcycle, will be used to move abducted individuals at night to avoid detection.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s intelligence agency (GDI) has issued warnings about potential ISKP attacks on key locations. Authorities have intensified efforts to track down missing operatives linked to the group.
“Right now, everyone is talking about the Champions Trophy – in schools, houses, markets, offices, everywhere. The events of 2009 feel like a bad dream. We were punished for 10 years. Our cricket went backwards,” Inzamam-ul-Haq recently told Reuters.
Pakistan on the Brink of Elimination from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025
Pakistan are on the brink of elimination from the ICC Champions Trophy after suffering back-to-back defeats against New Zealand and India. The Mohammad Rizwan-led team lost the tournament opener to New Zealand by 60 runs in Karachi, followed by a six-wicket defeat to India in Dubai on Sunday.
India’s victory has secured them a place in the semifinals, while Pakistan's chances of progressing are slim. For Pakistan to qualify, they must defeat Bangladesh by a significant margin while hoping that both India and Bangladesh beat New Zealand in the upcoming matches of the marquee tournament.
Their net run rate must surpass both New Zealand and Bangladesh. However, if New Zealand defeat Bangladesh on Monday, Pakistan will be officially knocked out of the tournament alongside Bangladesh.
