Veteran opener Rohit Sharma will retain his role as Team India's ODI captain for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled to take place in Pakistan and Dubai. Pace bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is expected to be included in the 15-member squad for the tournament despite injury concerns.

The BCCI confirmed that Rohit Sharma will remain as captain for India's ODI squad, with the official announcement set to take place during a press conference on January 18. The squads for both the Champions Trophy and the upcoming ODI matches against England will be revealed during the same event.

Rohit Sharma's Future Came Into Sharp Focus After Sydney Test

Rohit Sharma's future in the Indian team gained attention after he opted out from the playing XI in the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this month. However, he clarified that it should not be seen as a retirement.

The 37-year-old has been struggling with form, especially during the home series against New Zealand, where India suffered a 3-0 whitewash. Rohit scored only 91 runs in six innings at an average of 15.16 against New Zealand, and his form worsened further in the BGT, scoring just 31 runs in five innings.

To regain his form, Rohit has been training with the Mumbai squad in preparation for the second phase of the Ranji Trophy. After ending his T20I career with a World Cup win in Barbados last year, Rohit Sharma now aims to lead India to another title at the Champions Trophy.

Jasprit Bumrah Set to Be Included in Preliminary Squad for Champions Trophy 2025

Jasprit Bumrah's participation in the Champions Trophy remains uncertain following a back spasm during the final Test against Australia in Sydney. According to a report by India Today, Bumrah will be included in the preliminary squad, but his final selection for the marquee tournament will depend on his fitness.

The selectors are reportedly keen on seeing him play at least one competitive match before the event to assess his condition. Sanju Samson and Karun Nair are not expected to make the squad. The three ODIs against England will be India's final matches in the format before the Champions Trophy begins.

Sanju Samson and Karun Nair Not Expected to Make the Squad

Karun Nair has been impressive in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he scored 752 runs in 8 matches, including five centuries in seven innings. His performance made him a surprise contender for the Champions Trophy squad. However, selectors reportedly believe it would be unwise to bring him back.

On the other hand, Sanju Samson is unlikely to feature in the ODI squad for the Champions Trophy despite being included in the England T20Is. The selectors are not considering him due to his lack of participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, as they want national players to feature in domestic competitions.
