ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Jos Buttler confirms Jacob Bethell ruled out due to injury

England National Cricket Team captain Jos Buttler has shared a disappointing update on Jacob Bethell after his team’s four-wicket loss to the India National Cricket Team in the second ODI of the ongoing three-match ODI series at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on February 9.

Jacob Bethell had played an impressive knock of 51 runs as well as taken one wicket while giving away 18 runs with his left-arm spin in the first ODI in Nagpur, where England also suffered a four-wicket loss to India. But after a few hours of the game, the 21-year-old started feeling pain in his upper left leg, and later a scan revealed a suspected tear.

However, the extent of the young English sensation’s injury is yet to be known, as ECB is yet to make an official announcement about his status, but it is being said that the hamstring injury is expected to keep him out of action for four to six weeks.

And even after the second ODI against India, Jos Buttler has hinted that Jacob Bethell will miss the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 after picking up a hamstring injury in Nagpur.

The England National Cricket Team captain has also admitted that losing Bethell will be a big blow for them, as he’s been one of their most promising young talents recently.

Jos Buttler said in Cuttack, “I'm pretty sure he's been ruled out of the Champions Trophy, to be honest. That's really disappointing for him; obviously he played nicely the other day and has been one of the really exciting players, so it's a shame that the injury is going to rule him out.”

Since making his international debut against Australia last year, Bethell has so far played 9 ODIs for England, scoring 218 runs and taking 5 wickets in 8 innings. He also impressed everyone with his performance in the debut Test series, scoring three half-centuries and averaging 52 against New Zealand. He also has 196 runs to his name in 9 T20I innings.

Tom Banton called up as cover for Ahmedabad ODI

With Jamie Smith still recovering from a calf injury, England had to use assistant coaches Marcus Trescothick and Paul Collingwood as substitute fielders during the second ODI against India in Cuttack on Sunday. However, Tom Banton has been called up as cover for the third and final ODI.

Tom Banton is set to arrive in India on Monday (February 10) before the final ODI in Ahmedabad on February 12, and he is likely to be drafted into England’s 15-member squad as a replacement for Bethell for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Banton was the star for Somerset in 2019 which earned him an England call-up, and he went on to play 20 white-ball games for his country, with his last appearance coming in January 2022. After struggling for form and missing out on England selection, Tom has made a strong comeback.

The 26-year-old wicketkeeper-batter recently dominated the ILT20 2025, scoring 493 runs in 11 matches, including two centuries, and finishing as the tournament's top run-scorer. The right-handed batter played for MI Emirates in the ILT20.

Notably, all the participating teams can make any changes to their 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy till February 12. England will kick off their ICC Champions Trophy campaign against Australia in Lahore on February 22.
