ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Mohammad Nabi leaves Afghanistan cricket

Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi will retire from One Day International (ODI) cricket after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, set to be played in February-March. Mohammad Nabi's retirement decision was confirmed by the Afghanistan Cricket Board CEO, according to a recent report on Cricbuzz.
Mohammad Nabi made his ODI debut for Afghanistan in 2009 against Scotland. He scored 58 runs off 64 balls in Afghanistan's 89-run victory. Since then, he has become a key player for Afghanistan as an all-rounder. Nabi also captained Afghanistan in their first-ever ODI World Cup in 2015.

On Friday, November 8, Afghanistan's Chief Executive, Naseeb Khan, confirmed Mohammad Nabi's decision to retire from ODIs after the 2025 Champions Trophy. Naseeb Khan revealed that Nabi had informed the board of his intention a few months ago, and the board supported his decision.
"Yes, Nabi is retiring from ODIs after the Champions Trophy and he informed the board about his desire," Naseeb told Cricbuzz.
"He told me a few months back that he wants to end his ODI career after the Champions Trophy and we welcome his decision. After the Champions Trophy, what I understand is that he is expected to continue his T20 career, and that is the plan until now," he added.
Mohammad Nabi Afghanistan's Second All-Time Leading Run-Scorer and Wicket-Taker
The 39-year-old cricketer has played 3 Tests, 165 ODIs, and 128 T20 Internationals in his illustrious cricketing career. The veteran all-rounder has scored over 5,000 runs and taken 250 wickets for the Afghanistan team. It’s worth mentioning that Nabi retired from the longer format of the game in 2019.
Nabi is Afghanistan's second-all-time leading run-scorer and wicket-taker in ODIs. He has scored 3,549 runs at an average of 27.30 and a strike rate of 86.77, including two centuries and 17 half-centuries. He has taken 171 wickets at an average of 32.15, including four four-wicket hauls and one five-wicket haul.
Mohammad Nabi Starred in Afghanistan's Win in First ODI vs Bangladesh
Mohammad Nabi is currently playing for the Afghanistan national cricket team in a three-match ODI series against Bangladesh in Sharjah. Nabi made a strong impact by scoring 84 runs off 79 balls and taking a wicket during the series opener. Afghanistan recorded a convincing 92-run victory in the game.
The Afghans collapsed to 71-5 in 20 overs after winning the toss and batting first. Nabi scored 84 runs off 79 balls, including four boundaries and three sixes, helping Afghanistan post a competitive total of 235 runs.
The seasoned campaigner also took the wicket of Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who was on 47. Afghanistan took a 1-0 lead in the ongoing ODI series. The second ODI match will be played at the same venue (Sharjah) on Saturday, November 9.
