The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 kickstarted on Wednesday (19th February) at the National Stadium in Karachi. Hosts Pakistan took on New Zealand in the tournament opener and it was a perfect start for the Mitchell Santner-led side in the eight-nation tournament.
Asked to bat, New Zealand were off to a decent start with the bat as Devon Conway and Will Young (107) added 39 runs for the opening stand in no time. But after that, Pakistan made a strong comeback, picking three quick wickets in Conway, Kane Williamson, and Daryl Mitchell, leaving the opposition at 73 for three.

Glenn Phillips (61), in the end, slammed a brutal half-century and supported Latham well as the duo added 125 runs together. Based on their partnership, New Zealand posted a total of 320 runs on the board, which at one moment didn't look possible.
Pakistan struggle in the chase, get all out for 260 to lose first game of ICC Champions Trophy 2025
In the chase, Pakistan were forced to promote Saud Shakeel to the top, but the move didn't work as the batter was back in the hut for six. With Fakhar Zaman unavailable for the first 25 minutes, Mohammad Rizwan had to walk at three, but he, too, failed as the hosts were left reeling at 22/2.
Babar Azam (64) and Fakhar (24) added 47 runs for the third wicket before struggling Zaman was back in the hut. Babar paved his way to the slow fifty while Salman Agha (42) batted with great intent as the duo added 58 runs for the fourth wicket.
After that, Pakistan kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Khushdil Shah (69) hit a crucial fifty in the end to keep his team in the hut, but the New Zealand bowlers were too good. The Black Caps ended Pakistan's innings with 260 runs to win the game by 60 runs and start the tournament on high.
