ICC ODI Rankings: Virat Kohli Remains No.2 Ranked ODI Batsman; Kusal Perera, Dushmantha Chameera Big Gainers

The ICC has released its latest update of the ODI Players’ rankings on June 2, 2021, Wednesday. This update sees India skipper Virat Kohli holding onto his no.2 ranking in the ICC ODI batting rankings, which has Pakistani captain Babar Azam on the top.
However, the biggest gainers have been the new Sri Lanka ODI and T20I skipper Kusal Perera and fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera, who shined with the bat and ball respectively in their team’s victory over Bangladesh in the third and final ODI recently in Dhaka. Though Bangladesh registered their maiden ODI series win over Sri Lanka, the visitors thumped by 97 runs in the last match of the -series.

There was not much change in the top 10 of either batsmen or bowlers ODI rankings which the ICC updates weekly on Wednesdays. While Babar Azam remained no.1 in ODI batting rankings, India captain Virat Kohli and vice-captain Rohit Sharma have held onto their second and third spots in the ODI Batsmen Rankings.
As far as the bowling rankings are concerned, Trent Boult remained the no.1 ranked ODI bowler, followed by Bangladesh’s Mehidy Hasan. However, India’s Jasprit Bumrah managed to hold onto his no.5 spot in the bowling rankings as well.
Kusal Perera, Dushmantha Chameera Gain Big
Sri Lanka fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera and captain Kusal Perera made considerable gains in the latest update of the ICC ODI players’ rankings after their team’s 97-run win over Bangladesh in the third ODI of their ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League series.
Chameera’s career-best haul of five for 16, which won him the Player of the Match award, took him to a career-best 33rd position, an advancement of 27 slots. . The 29-year-old had started the series in 72nd position and moved up last week with a three-wicket haul in the second match.
Meanwhile, Kusal Perera who was named the new ODI and T20I captain of Sri Lanka hit his sixth ODI century, which has lifted him 13 places to 42nd place in the weekly update to the men’s rankings. This is only one place shy of the left-handed batsman’s career-best ranking of 41st achieved in June 2016.
