The International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to begin a series of meetings in Singapore on Thursday. While the Asia Cup is a matter for the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), the ICC is expected to informally discuss the future of the 2025 edition, which is scheduled to be hosted by India in September of this year.
Tensions between India and Pakistan have put the Asia Cup in uncertainty. The situation deteriorated following a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam in April. In response, the Indian Army launched 'Operation Sindoor' and targeted nine terror camps and launchpads in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in May.
India’s Participation in 2025 Asia Cup Remains Uncertain Amid Political Tensions
India’s participation in the Asian Tournament remains uncertain amid political tensions and leadership concerns. There were reports that India, the official hosts, refused to play after Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who also heads the ACC, took charge of the tournament's organization.
However, according to the Times of India, all six teams - India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and the UAE - are close to getting government approval. The report added that the entire tournament is expected to be held in the UAE, despite India retaining hosting rights.
There were also hints of progress, including speculation that India and Pakistan would be placed in the same group. As per reports, the two arch-rivals could face each other at least twice during the tournament.
ICC Takes Asia Cup 2025 Matters Into Its Own Hands
According to Forbes, the future of the Asia Cup 2025 remains uncertain due to deteriorating diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan. The issue is expected to be discussed during ICC meetings.
That report added that the T20 event is tentatively scheduled for September and may be hosted in the UAE if it avoids cancellation. The Asian tournament is a major revenue generator for the ACC, making its continuation crucial for the regional governing body.
"While the Asia Cup is an Asian Cricket Council matter, discussions are set to be held on the sidelines over whether the September T20 tournament will go ahead amid a breakdown of relations between rivals India and Pakistan," the report read.
India Are the Most Successful Team in Asia Cup History
India refused to travel to Pakistan for the 2023 edition, leading to a hybrid model where all their matches were played in Sri Lanka. The Men in Blue eventually clinched the title with a dominant 10-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the final in Colombo.
India are the most successful team in the tournament's history. They have won the tournament eight times - seven in the ODI format and once in T20Is. They secured victories in the years 1984, 1988, 1990-91, 1995, 2010, 2016, 2018, and 2023.
Sri Lanka are the second-most successful team with six titles, while Pakistan have lifted the trophy twice.
