Even before the upcoming World Cup, Bangladesh have suffered a huge injury blow as their fast-bowler Ebadot Hossain is all but out of the competition after going under the knife.

His participation was very much in doubt for the World Cup after he suffered a knee injury during the ODI series against Afghanistan last month. He had sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during the series. Bangladesh had named him in the 17-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup before replacing him with uncapped pacer Tanzim Hasan after he failed to recover through the rehabilitation program.

There were hopes that Ebadot Hossain might be able to play in the World Cup. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) was exploring different options for any conservative treatment. However, Bangladesh’s hopes have been dashed by the surgery.

The right-arm pacer left for the United Kingdom last Monday (August 28) to consult knee specialists. And on Wednesday (August 30), he gave an update about himself, saying that he would be undergoing surgery on his knee. He posted a photo of himself from the operation theatre on his social media accounts.

“Yes, Ebadot is undergoing an operation. We will work out a rehabilitation plan for him after the operation,” BCB chief physician Dr. Debashish Chowdhury told local news outlet The Daily Star.

“There is pretty much nothing we can do now that he had to go for an operation. As you know, it takes some time to recover,” said the doctor as he confirmed that the pacer would not participate in the upcoming World Cup.

Missing Ebadot Hossain for the World Cup will be a huge blow for Bangladesh. He has done well in the ODIs since making his debut in August last year. The right-arm pacer has taken wickets in all but one of the 12 ODIs he has played so far. He has picked up an impressive 22 wickets in 12 ODIs.

Bangladesh to play Asia Cup without key stars:

Bangladesh will be without some of their key players for the upcoming Asia Cup. Not only Ebadot Hossain, Tamim Iqbal, and Litton Das will also miss the tournament. While Tamim will miss the competition due to a back injury, Litton could not travel to Sri Lanka after failing to recover from a viral fever. But unlike Ebadot Hossain, both Tamim and Litton are expected to play in the World Cup.
