ICC World Cup 2023: Eoin Morgan Points Out 'Virat Kohli' Factor As He Backs Rohit Sharma To Lead India To Glory In World Cup

Former England captain Eoin Morgan has said Rohit Sharma has the ability to lead India to glory in the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023.

Rohit Sharma & Co. will be under immense pressure to win the tournament this year as the World Cup will be taking place in India. The Men in Blue have endured a tough time in ICC competitions in recent years and have not won an ICC trophy since 2013. They have also not won the World Cup since 2011.

Rohit Sharma’s track record as India’s captain has not been very impressive either so far. Last year, India crashed out at the Super 4 stage in the Asia Cup and the semifinal stage in the T20 World Cup under his captaincy. A couple of months ago, he also failed to guide the team to a win in the World Test Championship final against Australia.

One of the reasons behind India’s failure in the big competitions under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy is the absence of some big names due to injury. But he is set to have a very strong squad at his disposal for the upcoming World Cup and will be looking to guide India all the way.

Eoin Morgan on Rohit Sharma’s captaincy:

Eoin Morgan knows a thing or two about dealing with the pressure while leading a team in the World Cup at home. In 2019, he led England to a historic first World Cup title on home soil. And the England great believes Rohit Sharma has the ability to do so as well. Morgan opined that Rohit has a good team to lead in the World Cup and also said that the captain commands a lot of respect from his teammates.

“I have always been a fan of Rohit Sharma, the captain and leader. If you see, he has the ability to carry his team with him, and also has the team to do extremely well in the World Cup.

“Having spoken to a number of players in his team, I know Rohit commands a lot of respect among the group and is a really good leader of men. Even when he wasn’t captain, I am sure he made a difference in the change room and was a key influence,” Morgan told RevSportz.

Speaking further, Morgan pointed out the importance of Virat Kohli for the Rohit Sharma-led side. The former cricketer stated that Kohli’s experience of winning the World Cup at home in 2011 will be crucial for the team.

Much like I think Virat Kohli is now in the change room, and that’s another major plus for India going into the World Cup. Kohli, who played and won the World Cup in 2011 on home soil, will make a major difference to Rohit in the Indian change room,” he said.

The World Cup is scheduled to be played from October 5 to November 19. At present, India are gearing up for the Asia Cup, scheduled to start on August 30.
