International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman Greg Barclay admitted that they have lost their way a little bit in the ODIs but it’s something that is a work in progress. He also highlighted how World Cup Super League is helping associate nations to make their mark.

The Netherlands team recently became the second team from the Qualifiers to make it into the main tournament in India later this year. Following their win, they along with other associate nations have raised calls to continue the World Cup Super League (WCSL) in some form for the 2027 event, which will see 14 teams participating in the main tournament.

In the ICC ODI Super League, 13 teams took part and it allowed associate teams to take on high-ranked teams as well. It’s fair to say that the ODI Super league played a great role in keeping the 50-over format exciting and alive.

ICC Chairman Greg Barclay admitted that Super League helped associate teams. He also confirmed that either the league or something related to that will be there. Speaking in a press conference, Greg Barclay said (as quoted by ESPNCricinfo):

“I don’t think there is any doubt that the Super League was hugely helpful in terms of a pathway to Associate countries. The fact that you are seeing some of the performances from the Associate members over here, in large part, was due to the fact that they have had the experience of playing teams ranked above where they are.

“It’s a work on. It’s no secret that T20 is in a pretty good place, Test cricket has had a shot in the arm [with the World Test Championship] but maybe we’ve lost our way a little bit in the 50-over format. We need to address both context and relevance and the experience around that. Is that a re-creation of the Super League or something equivalent? I don’t know but I suspect that the answer to that will be yes. We need to do something.”

ICC World Cup 2023: “We need to make sure one-day cricket continues to have a following,” says Greg Barclay

The growing advent of T20s has put the ODI format under the scanner. Many greats of the game have raised calls to shorten the game and reduce it to 40 overs. But with World Cup around the corner, all the talks might be put up to rest.

Greg Barclay admitted that the ODI format is running risk at the moment but they need to find ways to keep ODIs alive. Greg Barclay explained:

“We need to make sure one-day cricket continues to have a following. It’s running the risk at the moment of having a lot of irrelevancy in terms of the bilateral arrangements that are made. We’ve got 14 teams [qualifying for the World Cup] in the next cycle, so we’ve got to make sure they are competitive and prepared when they get to those events,” He concluded.
