Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar spoke on Suryakumar Yadav’s role in the upcoming ODI World Cup and said that the right-handed batsman can still play a pivotal role for the Men in Blue in the tournament.

While speaking on Star Sports, the 58-year-old said that most of the problems that Rohit Sharma’s India were going through have been resolved and the batsmen are in good form. which is a good sign.

Sanjay Manjrekar further talked about Suryakumar Yadav and said that the team management needs to think about SKY’s role in the batting lineup.

Manjrekar accepted that SKY’s batting form in the ODI has not been well but the former Indian player said that Suryakumar can still play a crucial role.

Sanjay Manjrekar concluded by saying that this is the only loose end the Men in Blue need to take a decision on, whether they want to include him in the squad for the ODI World Cup 2023 or not.

“Most issues seem to be addressed, the batters are in pretty good form. India of course have to ponder on the Suryakumar Yadav case because because fifty-over case is not quite making the same impact but he will be such a temptation on a big stage when he walks in with just fifteen, or seventeen overs left in the innings, and can be a game changer. That is an issue India need to finalize whether they want Suryakumar Yadav. That is one loose end they need to tie,” Sanjay Manjrekar on Suryakumar Yadav.

My numbers in ODIs are really bad: Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar, who has played 26 ODI matches for India and scored 511 runs with a strike rate of 101.39, accepted that his stats in the 50-over format are not really up to the mark.

During India’s West Indies tour, Suryakumar Yadav acknowledged his poor performance and added that getting better is important.

“If I am honest with myself, my numbers in ODIs are really bad. And there’s no shame in admitting that; everyone knows that already. You need to be honest with yourself; but then, getting better is also important. That is what Rohit [Sharma] and Rahul [Dravid] sir have told me that because I don’t play a lot of ODIs, I need to practice and think as to what I can do,” the 32-year-old said.

Rohit Sharma-led India will start their ODI World Cup 2023 campaign against Australia on October 8th at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
