England, captained by Ben Stokes, defeated Australia in a low-scoring fourth Test of the Ashes 2025-26 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Day 2 (Saturday, December 27). The result has impacted the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 standings, with teams changing positions in the table.

England ended a long wait for success in Australia by defeating Australia in the fourth Ashes Test. It was England’s first Test win on Australian soil in 15 years. The Boxing Day Test finished in just six sessions. Chasing a target of 175, England wrapped up the game quickly to stay alive in the five-match Ashes series.

Australia Bowled Out for 132 as England Pacers Dominate on Day 2

Australia’s second innings ended quickly as England’s fast bowlers took full advantage. Australia were bowled out for 132 in just over 34 overs. Brydon Carse was the best bowler for the visitors with figures of 4 for 34, while captain Ben Stokes took three wickets to clean up the lower order.

Marnus Labuschagne was dismissed for 8. Travis Head, who looked dangerous on 46, was bowled by Carse. Usman Khawaja fell for a second-ball duck, and Alex Carey was out for 4. Steve Smith and Cameron Green added 31 runs.

However, Australia then collapsed again, losing four wickets for just 13 runs. Green was dismissed for 19, and Carse removed Michael Neser and Mitchell Starc in the same over. Smith remained not out on 24 as Jhye Richardson became the final wicket. Gus Atkinson left the field with a suspected hamstring injury.

The defeat was Australia’s first loss of the current World Test Championship cycle after seven matches. However, Australia are placed at the top of the standings with a points percentage of 85.71.

New Zealand and South Africa are in second and third positions, respectively. England gained valuable ground as their PCT improved to 35.18. India are sixth in the table after nine matches, having recorded four wins, four losses, and one draw.

Sri Lanka and Pakistan are also placed above India but have featured in only two matches each. At the bottom, Bangladesh and the West Indies are yet to register a win in the current WTC cycle.
