South Africa have bolstered their position at the top of the World Test Championship points table (WTC points table) with a thumping victory over Pakistan in the second Test. The Proteas inflicted a 10-wicket loss on Pakistan in the final game of the series, played at the Newlands, Cape Town.
After the poor show in the first innings, Pakistan did well with the bat in the second innings. However, South Africa eventually overcame Pakistan's resistance on day four of the Test and clean swept the two-match series.
South Africa put themselves in the driver's seat by posting a mammoth total of 615 runs in the first innings. Opening batsman Ryan Rickelton starred with the bat, scoring 259 while captain Temba Bavuma and wicketkeeper-batsman Kyle Verreynne scored centuries as well.
In reply, Pakistan were bowled out for a paltry total of 194 runs. Barring Babar Azam (58), no other Pakistan batter could reach the 50-run mark in the innings. For South Africa, Kagiso Rabada picked up 2 wickets while debutant Kwena Maphaka and Keshav Maharaj claimed two wickets each.
Asked to follow on, Pakistan did well in the second innings. Captain Shan Masood and Babar Azam shared a big stand of 205 runs for the first wicket. However, once the stand was broken following Babar's dismissal for 81, Pakistan kept losing wickets at regular intervals.
They were eventually bowled out for 478 runs. Masood was Pakistan's top scorer, scoring 145 runs. Rabada and Maharaj picked up 3 wickets each in the innings.
Set a target of 58 runs, South Africa crossed the finishing line in just 7.1 overs. David Bedingham, promoted to open the innings, smashed 44 off just 30 balls to ensure that the Proteas reach home without any fuss.
