Nissanka showed why he is one of the best Test batters in the world presently. Apart from Pathum Nissanka, Kamindu Mendis also played a brilliant knock of 87 runs, as Sri Lanka ended their innings at 485, giving Bangladesh only a 10-run lead in the first Test at Galle.

In the second innings, Bangladesh took a slow and steady approach and batted for 87 overs, using up most of the final day. Najmul Hossain Shanto has smashed another century, an unbeaten 125, and become the first Bangladeshi captain to score centuries in both innings of a Test match and only the 18th in the history of Test cricket.

After Shadman Islam’s stunning knock of 76 runs, Bangladesh declared their innings at 285/6 and set Sri Lanka a target of 296 runs with 39 overs left on the final day in Galle. Tharindu Rathnayake was the standout bowler for Sri Lanka, taking three wickets in the third inning.

Chasing the target, Sri Lanka was in trouble at 48 for 4 in the 24th over. However, Kamindu Mendis and captain Dhananjaya de Silva held their nerve and batted safely to ensure the match ended in a draw against Bangladesh on Saturday in Galle.

With the first Test ending in a draw, both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh opened their accounts in the WTC 2025-27. Each team earned 4 points and now has a points percentage (PCT) of 33.33.

In the previous WTC cycle, Sri Lanka came close to reaching the final but missed out after losing a series to South Africa and Australia. They ended up in sixth place with a PCT of 38.46. On the other hand, Bangladesh finished just behind them with a PCT of 31.25.

Here is the Updated ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 Points Table:

Meanwhile, there are nine teams participating in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle, including India, Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies. Recently, South Africa crushed Australia by five wickets to become WTC champions at Lord’s.

In the WTC 2025-2027, a total of 27 series and 71 matches will be played among the nine participating teams. Each team will play six series—three at home and three away. Each series can have two to five Test matches, depending on the individual team’s schedule.

The points system is the same as the last WTC edition. A team will earn 12 points for a win, and a tie will give 6 points to each team, while the teams will get 4-4 points for the draw, and a loss earns them zero points. If a team falls behind the required over rate in a match, they lose one point for every over they are short in the WTC standings.

Since each team plays a different number of matches, the rankings are based on the percentage of points they earn, called PCT (Points Percentage). The two teams with the highest PCT at the end of the league stage will face each other in the World Test Championship Final in 2027 at Lord’s.
