India are set to start the ICC World Test Championship (2025–27) cycle with a five-match Test series against England, beginning on Friday, June 20, in Leeds. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retiring from Test cricket, Shubman Gill takes over as captain, while Rishabh Pant has been appointed vice-captain.
India missed out on the World Test Championship title in both 2021 and 2023, led by Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma respectively. The India national cricket team will be aiming to secure the WTC crown. Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill will be focused on steering India to their maiden WTC triumph.

India Set to Host Home Test Series Against WI and SA in Late 2025
Team India will host two crucial home Test series later in 2025 as part of their World Test Championship campaign.
In October, they will face the West Indies in a two-match series, with games scheduled in Ahmedabad and New Delhi. It will be an ideal opportunity to secure early WTC points under familiar conditions.
The Men in Blue will then take on South Africa at home in November–December. The Proteas will play two Tests in Kolkata and Guwahati. South Africa topped the WTC 2023–25 table and advanced to the final, where they are currently facing defending champions Australia at Lord's Cricket Stadium in London.
India to Conclude WTC 2025–27 Cycle with Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Home
In August 2026, India will tour Sri Lanka for a two-Test series — their only away assignment in the subcontinent during this cycle. While the conditions may be familiar, Sri Lanka's strong home record will require India to show flexibility and smart strategy.
Later in that year, India will travel to New Zealand for another two-Test series. Known for their seam-friendly pitches, New Zealand will pose a tough challenge to India's batting depth and adaptability. This series will be a crucial component of India’s overseas performance record.
The campaign will conclude with a marquee home series against Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in January–February 2027. This five-Test contest could play a decisive role in determining qualification for the WTC final in June 2027. Overall, India’s WTC schedule will test their skills.
