KL Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara are two of India’s top hitters in the current generation. In international cricket, both have proven to be the backbone of the Indian batting order.

One has been a reliable No. 3 for India in Tests, while the other has excelled in all three. Although both batters boast of impressive careers and records, there have been times when colleagues with significantly less hitting experience have outperformed them. During India’s Test series trip of the West Indies in 2019, one such occurrence occurred.

Ishant Sharma’s Unpredictable Innings For India

India was reduced to 46/2 in the second game of the series after being forced into bat by the cheap wickets of Rahul and Pujara, but a half-century from Mayank Agarwal and Virat Kohli stabilised the innings. Hanuma Vihari also hit a century, but although all of these scores were predicted, Ishant Sharma‘s first-ever Test fifty was not.

Ishant scored his highest-ever Test score of 57 off just 80 balls with the aid of seven fours. The India bowler recounted the lighter occurrences that occurred in the changing room between Pujara, Rahul, and even the then-captain Virat Kohli as everyone celebrated Ishant’s fifty from the locker room.

Virat Kohli Could Not Believe When I Scored A Half-century: Ishant Sharma

“Virat is one of those who expresses himself a lot on the field. Like when I too scored a half-century, he couldn’t believe it. So, these things keep happening in our team. When I was batting, Pujara and KL Rahul said, ‘If he scores a 100, we might as well jump off a building in Jamaica,’ because they had gotten out quickly.

So, these things are always fun to be around. And Virat, like I said, is way too expressive,” Ishant told sports presenter Jatin Sapru on his YouTube show ‘The Warm-Up Show’.

In 105 Test matches, Ishant has scored 785 runs for India. Ishant has recorded scores of 31 against Sri Lanka and the West Indies in addition to the 57 against the West Indies, and he has frequently assisted India in wagging its tail. He has established successful lower-order alliances, frequently saving his squad when all seemed lost.
