Shreyas Iyer couldn’t find a place in the Indian Test squad for the England tour, despite performing in the domestic season. Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag is quite upset with Iyer’s omission from the Test squad.

Sehwag wants to see Iyer in the Test team because of his current form as Sehwag thinks it’s good to take an inform player to the tour because there are higher chances of him performing.

Virender Sehwag loves Shreyas Iyer’s approach

Virender Sehwag loves Shreyas Iyer’s aggressive approach, and if Iyer is selected in the squad and plays with the same approach in red-ball cricket, it will benefit the team most.

Sehwag believes that to counter England’s aggressive approach in Test cricket, the Indian team can also adapt to an aggressive approach and put them under pressure.

“When you're in good form, it's good to take him to the tour because there are higher chances of him performing. I would want to see him in Test team. If he keeps the same approach in Test cricket, it benefits the team.

"If you have 2-3 players like that, it sets fear in the opposition. England plays at 6-7 runs/over. If Indian team even manages to play at 4-5 runs/over, they can put them under pressure,” Sehwag stated.

Sehwag also highlighted that Iyer had a great season in all formats, and also led Punjab Kings well in the IPL 2025. Sehwag credited Iyer’s recent form and asked management why he can’t play red-ball cricket.

"Iyer has had a great season, he is also the captain. Why can't he play in Test cricket? He can definitely play all three formats,” Sehwag added.

Iyer’s aggressive cricket would have put the pressure on England in the English conditions, where bowlers have the upper hand in the swing conditions.

Shreyas Iyer’s brilliant run

Iyer was dropped from the Indian Test team midway through the England series in 2023. After being dropped from the side, Iyer proved his worth in domestic cricket.

Iyer played an important role in Mumbai’s winning run in the Ranji Trophy title triumph and continued to deliver brilliant performances consistently for India in ODIs as well.

Shreyas also played a key role in the winning campaign of India's Champions Trophy triumph in 2025.

Karun Nair returned to the Indian test setup after nine years, and Sai Sudharsan will make his debut in the Indian Test team. Both players were selected over Shreyas Iyer in the squad.

Nair and Sudharsan also performed well in the domestic circuit, and the selectors gave them a chance over Iyer in the red-ball format.
