Riyan Parag, on Saturday (July 7), could not perform well with the bat on his T20I debut in the ongoing first T20I between India and Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club.

The match is India's first since they were crowned the T20 world champions last week although no player from the World Cup-winning squad is in the team for the ongoing game. With four uncapped players in the squad, India handed debuts to three of them for the series-opener - Abhishek Sharma, Riyan Parag, and Dhruv Jurel.

However, two of those debutants - Abhishek Sharma and Riyan Parag - failed to deliver with the bat. Abhishek Sharma was the first to depart. The left-handed batsman opened the innings with captain Shubman Gill and could not even open his account. He was dismissed for a four-ball duck in the first over by Brian Bennett.

In the fourth over, Blessing Muzarabani dismissed Ruturaj Gaikwad for 7 to put India in more trouble. Riyan Parag joined Gill in the middle after Gaikwad's dismissal and had a good opportunity to showcase his talent by delivering with the bat in the pressure situation.

However, he could score only 2 runs before being sent back by Tendai Chatara as India found themselves reeling at 22 for 3 in the fifth over. And as soon as Riyan Parag was dismissed, the fans were quick to take a dig at him for his failure. Some even reminded him of his recent comment where he had said that he wouldn't watch the T20 World Cup because he was not on the team.

Here's how the fans reacted to Riyan Parag's performance on his debut:

Parag will be looking to bounce back in the second game by scoring big. The Assam star had earned his maiden India call-up last month after enjoying a brilliant campaign in this year's IPL. He enjoyed a breakthrough season with the bat for Rajasthan Royals, finishing IPL 2024 as the third-highest run-scorer. Parag had scored 573 runs with the help of 4 half-centuries.

Talking about the game, India were reeling at 61/6 in the 13th over at the time of writing this report. After Parag's departure, Rinku Singh (0) and Dhruv Jurel (7) failed to get going as well before Zimbabwe sent back Gill for 31 to take charge of the game. Washington Sundar and Ravi Bishnoi were batting in the middle at the time of compiling this report.
