"I'm England's Test Captain"- Ben Stokes Drops Retirement Bombshell
Ben Stokes retired from the ODI format of the game in 2022 after the India series. However, he was asked to come out of his retirement prior to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. He made a comeback in the ODI team during the ENG Vs NZ series and he scored 182 in an ODI against New Zealand. However, he was not available for a few starting matches due to an injury.
England‘s World Cup 2023 campaign was terrible with the defending champions only managing to secure three wins out of nine games. They barely qualified for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 securing the seventh position on the points table. Ben Stokes pulled it back for England in their final two league games against Netherlands and Pakistan respectively.
The English all-rounder scored a brilliant century against the Dutch side and played a solid knock of 84 against Pakistan. Two back-to-back solid performances for Ben Stokes got two victories for England. However, the future of Ben Stokes in ODI cricket is not a huge probability. When asked about his future plans for this format, he was sceptical about participating given that he is the test captain for England and it is important for him to manage his workload.

Ben Stokes stated, “Look I think to answer that one again it goes back to my initial reason for stepping away from this format was just the workload. I’m the test captain got a lot of stuff coming up, there’s a lot of stuff that I want to do with our test team and you know that’ll be a decision that would probably I have to think about quite hard. Who knows probably sort of cleanout coming up so you know the body might be in a lot better position than it was 18 months ago.”
The future of Ben Stokes in ODI cricket might be a bit uncertain but he will be a part of the England Cricket Team in Test and T20 format. He is one of the greatest clutch players in the history of the game and has given a lot of memorable innings to remember. England now gears up for their tour of the Carribean Coast. They will face the West Indies in three ODIs and five T20Is starting from December 3.
