Team India opener Prithvi Shaw has opened up about his history of controversies during a difficult phase in his cricketing career. The right-handed batter compared himself to Jethalal, the lead character from the popular TV show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, while addressing his controversies.
Prithvi Shaw has been struggling with fitness over the past year. The young cricketer was dropped from Mumbai’s squads for the Ranji Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy in the last domestic season. His declining form and off-field issues also led to him going unsold at the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Apart from that, Shaw was previously embroiled in a public controversy involving a social media influencer. In 2023, he was accused of molestation but was later acquitted by the court.

Prithvi Shaw stated that he doesn’t actively seek controversies, but they somehow find him. Shaw said that it has been a while since anything major happened, but controversies still tend to follow him.
“Nothing like this has happened for a long time, but one thing I would like to say is that controversies catch me. I am Jethalal of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah,” he said, as quoted by Dainik Jagran.
For context, Jethalal is a character from the Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, portrayed by actor Dilip Joshi. Jethalal is often at the center of the show's comedic conflicts, which largely revolve around his misadventures.
MCA Grants Prithvi Shaw NOC to Represent New Team
Prithvi Shaw, once hailed as the next Sachin Tendulkar after scoring a century on his Test debut in 2018, has seen his career take a downturn. He last played for India in July 2021 against Sri Lanka and played his most recent domestic match for Mumbai during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final.
Ahead of the upcoming domestic season, Shaw is reportedly set to leave Mumbai. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has granted him a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to switch teams. Shaw, who made his debut for Mumbai in 2017, expressed his gratitude to the MCA in an email requesting the NOC.
According to The Indian Express, Shaw has received interest from other state teams. His relationship with the Mumbai setup had become strained, particularly after he was dropped from a Ranji Trophy match last year due to fitness issues.
Tell Me God, What More Do I Have to See - Prithvi Shaw
Prithvi Shaw, who went unsold at the IPL 2025 Mega Auction in Jeddah, had a disappointing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign, managing just 197 runs in nine matches with a top score of 49.
In response to his exclusion, the 25-year-old took to social media, questioning what more he needed to prove. He highlighted his List A career stats and expressed his determination to make a comeback.
“Tell me God, what more do I have to see.. if 65 innings, 3399 runs at an average of 55.7 with a strike rate of 126, I’m not good enough… but I will keep my faith in you and hopefully people believe in me still… cause I will come back for sure.. Om Sai Ram.,” Shaw stated in his social media post.
