Guyana Amazon Warriors captain Imran Tahir has expressed his desire to return for one final season in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). The 47-year-old leg-spinner stated that he wants to end his decorated T20 career in front of the home fans at Providence in Georgetown.
Tahir finished as the joint-leading wicket-taker during the 2026 tournament. However, the Guyana Amazon Warriors suffered a heartbreaking defeat in Qualifier 2. In contrast, the Guyana Amazon Warriors Women won their maiden Women’s CPL title in Barbados.
Imran Tahir Motivated for Final CPL Farewell at Providence
Speaking at a press conference in Georgetown, Imran Tahir expressed his desire to return for another season and finish his career in front of the Guyana Amazon Warriors supporters. The 47-year-old leg-spinner has played for the Warriors since making his CPL debut in 2018.
“I’m very keen to come back and play because I feel this is my home. I get a lot of love when I come here. I’m looking to finish my career in front of the Guyanese crowd,” Tahir said.
“There will be questions about me, and I’m the kind a guy that like challenges and stuff. For me, my part is to give my role not as a captain, but as a player towards the team. I think I tried my best, so obviously I leave it with the management, I leave it with the team owner,” Tahir declared.
Tahir took 16 wickets in 12 matches at an economy rate of 7.05 during CPL 2026. The veteran spinner is also the CPL’s all-time leading wicket-taker with 146 wickets in 102 matches at an average of 17.54 and an economy rate of 6.65. He is one wicket ahead of Sunil Narine.
Imran Tahir Focuses on Fitness Ahead of Potential Farewell
Imran Tahir stated that continuing to play at 47 requires strict discipline. The veteran said he remains motivated to stay fit, maintain his diet, and prepare for another season if the Warriors decide to retain him.
“I get motivated to come here and play my cricket, trying to get fit, eat well. It is not easy because if someone is eating ice cream and I’m in front of them, it’s very difficult to control yourself,” he said.
“So look, I’m very motivated. I really wanted to finish (this season) on a high note, and probably I’m looking to finish my career, obviously, in front of the Guyanese crowd. I just want to say a big thank you to them. I would really like to see myself coming here and say goodbye.”
His overall T20 record is impressive. Tahir has taken 593 wickets in the format, placing him fourth on the all-time list behind Rashid Khan, Sunil Narine, and Dwayne Bravo.
Guyana Amazon Warriors Suffer Playoff Heartbreak as Women Make History
The Guyana Amazon Warriors dominated the league stage, winning eight of their 10 matches and finishing at the top of the points table. However, their campaign ended with defeats in both playoff matches.
The Warriors were bowled out for just 76 against the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons in Qualifier 1. The Falcons chased down the target in only 5.2 overs to secure a nine-wicket victory.
Guyana had an opportunity to recover in Qualifier 2 against the Jamaica Kingsmen. Shimron Hetmyer smashed an unbeaten 102 off 45 balls to help the Warriors post 206/4, but Rovman Powell led the Kingsmen’s chase with an unbeaten 40 off 17 balls.
Jamaica reached the target with two balls remaining to eliminate the Warriors. The third-place finish extended the Warriors’ wait for another CPL title. They won their only championship in 2023 under Tahir’s captaincy before finishing runners-up in 2024 and 2025.
