Former India opener, Gautam Gambhir opines that Bhuvneshwar Kumar has a ‘very important’ role in the Indian side for the T20 World Cup. Gambhir says that the pacer’s potency while bowling at both the front and the back end of the innings makes him an absolutely imperative bowler.

Gautam Gambhir points out that Kumar has made significant gains in his death bowling, with his yorkers and pace variations, after being a predominantly new ball bowler in the early stage of his career. The 39-year-old cricketer-turned-commentator is excited to see Bhuvneshwar with India’s other two premier pacers – Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami.

“He will have a very important role. He can take wickets with the new ball and has emerged as a very good death bowler. When he made his debut in international cricket, he only used to bowl well with the new ball but if you see the last few years, he bowls as well at the death also,” said Gautam Gambhir while speaking with Star Sports.

“Just think if Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Shami bowl together where there is even slight help for the fast bowlers. He is a very effective bowler and also very clever. He knows how to bowl within his limitations. He has developed an excellent yorker and slower ones. So I feel he is an overall complete package,” he added.

Point of view of the economy Bhuvneshwar has been as effective as Bumrah: Gautam Gambhir

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has recently, in the ongoing T20I series against England, made his comeback after a long injury layoff. While he has just picked 1 wicket in 3 games, which can be attributed to a bit of rustiness on return – he has bowled with a brilliant economy of just 7 runs per over against the England batsmen who have looked to attack more often than not.

Gautam Gambhir emphasizing Kumar’s tight bowling says that the Sunrirsers Hyderabad seamer is as good as the world-class Jasprit Bumrah – Bhuvneshawar’s economy of 7.04 is just slightly more than Bumrah’s 6.67 in T20Is.

“If you see his overall T20 record, Jasprit Bumrah might have more wickets, but from the point of view of economy Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been as effective as Jasprit Bumrah,” the former Kolkata Knight Riders skipper asserted.
