When Rohit Sharma steps out to the field for the 2nd of the 3-match T20I series against Afghanistan tomorrow, he will be creating a record that no cricketer has ever achieved before in the shortest format of the game. Last year he topped Chris Gayle’s tally of most international sixes and with the start of 2024, Rohit Sharma is all set to make a few more records.

But what will be important for him in the 2nd T20I at Indore is the team’s victory and his own performance as an opener. He will be playing just his 2nd match in the format since the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final against England in November.

And after his first appearance since then in the 1st T20 against Afghanistan proved to be short-lived, Rohit will be aiming for a big one tomorrow. Now coming back to the records. His appearance tomorrow will make him the first-ever men’s cricketer to play 150 matches in the shortest format since making his debut way back in 2007 in Durban against England.

Rohit Sharma is anyways the most capped player in T20Is but reaching the 150-mark will definitely be special, given that he will be the first to do so. He could not do anything special in his 149th T20I appearance (which was the 1st T20 against Afghanistan) because of Shubman Gill not responding to his call for a single.

The 35-year-old had played a straight batted shot in the 2nd ball of Fazalhaq Farooqi’s first over which went to the fielder standing in the mid-off region. As soon as the ball went off from his bat, Rohit started his run towards the non-striker’s end but he was so unfortunate that Gill instead of hearing his call, kept on looking at the ball and stood firm inside his crease.

As a result, Rohit Sharma had to lose his wicket and he was certainly unhappy on his way back to the dressing room. But nonetheless, he will be looking to get some runs tomorrow in Indore to increase his tally of 3853 T20 runs for India.

Rohit Sharma Needs 44 Runs To Break Kohli’s Record And Needs 2 More Wins To Break MS Dhoni’s Record

Other than the most appearance record, Rohit Sharma has his sights set on 2 more records to break. His tally of 3853 T20I runs makes him the 2nd highest run scorer in the format with former India captain Virat Kohli at the summit with 4008 runs.

But that’s not the actual record. He will need 44 runs more to become India’s leading T20I scorer as captain. Rohit Sharma currently has 1527 runs as the captain while Kohli has 1570 runs as captain. Moreover, if India are able to complete a whitewash against Afghanistan then Rohit Sharma will break MS Dhoni’s record of most wins as captain.

Dhoni had 41 wins to his name and Rohit currently has 40 wins as captain out of 52 matches he has led as the skipper. Rohit Sharma will be looking to break these 2 records by the end of this series.
