IND vs AFG: Virat Kohli 6 Runs Away From Becoming First-Ever Indian To Achieve Remarkable T20 Feat
Virat Kohli returned to the shortest format for India after a long hiatus of 429 days. He played in the second T20I against Afghanistan and smashed 29 (16) on his return, striking five fours with his bat. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma both made their return to the T20Is in the series against Afghanistan after featuring in the semi-final defeat against England during the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Virat Kohli is nearing a unique feat in T20 cricket.
The batting maestro from India has already broken numerous records in cricket including some which were held by his idol Sachin Tendulkar. He recently broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most hundreds in the ODI format when he scored his 50th ODI ton against New Zealand in the semi-finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. He also broke the record for scoring the most runs in a single edition of the ODI World Cup. He amassed 765 runs in 11 innings in the 2023 World Cup.
Virat Kohli is close to another milestone in the T20 cricket. He is already the leading run-scorer in the shortest format for Men’s cricket amassing 4037 runs and now he just needs six runs to complete 12000 runs in T20 cricket. He currently boasts 11994 runs in T20 cricket at an average of 41.35 and a strike rate of 133.44 with 91 half-centuries and eight centuries to his name in the format. If he scores 6 runs in the next game, he will become the first Indian player in history to achieve the feat.
Apart from having 4037 runs in international T20s, Virat Kohli also has 7263 runs in IPL where he has recorded 50 half-centuries and seven tons. Only one of his eight tons in T20 cricket came in an international match which was in the 2022 Asia Cup when he scored 122* against Afghanistan. Virat Kohli will feature in the third T20I against Afghanistan and will hope to complete the milestone in that match.
Virat Kohli Has A Terrific Record In The Shortest Format
Virat Kohli has amassed 4037 runs in T20Is at an average of 52.42 in 116 appearances. He has a strike rate of 138.20 and has smashed a century and 37 half-centuries in the shortest format for India. Virat also has the best record in terms of runs in the IPL and holds the record of scoring the most runs in a single IPL edition where he amassed 973 runs in the 2016 edition of the IPL.
Virat Kohli has also been the top scorer in three editions of the ICC T20 World Cup which were in 2014,2016 and 2022. He also has won the Player of the tournament in two editions of the T20 World Cup (2014 and 2016). However, even after achieving so many feats in the T20 format, a T20 World Cup trophy is still missing in his trophy cabinet.
This year Virat has a chance of winning that trophy and becoming one of the most decorated players in cricket’s history. He will be playing in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 which is scheduled in June and will be hosted jointly by the West Indies and the United States of America.
