"Virat Kohli Challenging Himself.."- Harsha Bhogle's Striking Verdict On India Star's Return
Virat Kohli made his return to the T20Is after 429 days and he played a brisk innings of 29(16) in the second T20I against Afghanistan. He showed an aggressive intent while batting and smashed five fours while batting at a strike rate of 181.25. Harsha Bhogle has praised Virat Kohli for challenging himself with a different approach in the shortest format.
Virat Kohli is the highest run-getter in Men???s T20Is with 4037 runs in the format at an average of 52.43. However, even after boasting a strike rate of 138 in the format, he has been remarked as a slow progressor in the T20 format. He has played some of the most memorable innings in the shortest format and brings his best during the T20 World Cups.
Harsha Bhogle lauded Virat Kohli for his innings against Afghanistan calling it a kind of innings that a team wants in those situations. However, he said that the fans might have expected more from India???s batting maestro and that if Jaiswal or Gill had played such an innings then it would have been more acceptable. He said, ???Kohli???s innings of 29(16) will draw diverse comments because of his stature. From a T20 perspective, it was exactly the kind of innings a team wants. One of six batters scored more than a sixth of the runs at an SR > asking rate.???
???But because he is a great player, we expect more and think it was underwhelming. A 29(16) from Jaiswal or Gill will be more acceptable though it should be seen the same way. The 29(16) approach will produce, say a 60(33) a few times. It is admirable that at this stage of his career, Kohli is actually challenging himself in the shortest form. 29(16) is a better innings than 50(40) in a 170+ run chase.???

Virat Kohli before making his comeback in the second T20I against Afghanistan, last played a T20I match in 2022 which was the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 against England where India suffered a crushing defeat by 10 wickets. He scored 50 off 40 in the semi-finals and a lot of questions were raised about his strike rate after India lost the match.
Virat Kohli in T20Is has been a force to reckon, his stats in the shortest format are highly underrated because of his prowess in the longer formats. His innings at the MCG against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2022 can be rendered iconic because of the situation he was batting on and still, he managed to pull it off at the big stage.
India will hope that he will show a similar intent of aggression in the T20 World Cup scheduled in June. Virat Kohli has a knack for changing his style of play and can play as an anchor or as an aggressor depending on the situation. He has proved his worth in both styles of play and has succeeded mostly in the anchor???s role. Some experts have also suggested that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should open the innings for India in the T20 World Cup.
