Australia's team has suffered a major blow ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, as all-rounder Cameron Green's injury is more severe than thought.

According to SEN Cricket's Peter Lalor, Cameron Green has “no chance” of playing in the first Test of the five-match series on home soil.

The much-awaited Border-Gavaskar Trophy will take place in Australia from November 22 to January 7.

The upcoming Test series will be crucial for Australia as they haven't won the Test series against India since 2014-15. They have lost four consecutive Test series to India, including two series at home.

Cameron Green experienced lower back soreness after the third ODI against England last month. He had to miss the remainder of the series. The 25-year-old player returned to Australia after injury. Green was also ruled out of the opening round of the Sheffield Shield, which began on Tuesday, October 8.

Cameron Green Likely To Miss Entire Test Summer - Report

On Tuesday, The Nine papers reported that Australia is preparing for most of the summer without Green as a batter.

He could return to play as a batter for Australia A in their match against India A at the MCG in early November. Green may also be available for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.

Peter Lalor reported on Cricket Et Al that Cameron Green has "no chance" of playing in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener in Perth due to a serious back injury. The report added that there is a possibility Green could miss the entire Test summer, with further updates expected later on Wednesday.

Aaron Hardie Could Earn Call-Up From Selectors For BGT Series

Australia is facing a dilemma about including two all-rounders, Green and Mitchell Marsh, who aren't fully performing in that role.

This would open the door for pace-bowling all-rounder Aaron Hardie, who has an impressive first-class batting average of 40.45 and a bowling average of 28.53.

If Cameron Green is unavailable, Australia may reshuffle the batting order, with Steve Smith likely moving back to his preferred No. 4 spot.

Test openers like Cameron Bancroft, Matthew Renshaw, and Marcus Harris will compete for the opening slot alongside senior Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja.

There's No Doubt About That - Darren Lehmann

Former Australian coach Darren Lehmann said that Steve Smith should bat at the No. 4 spot. Lehmann added that either Green has to open or they go for a traditional opener for the upcoming Test series.

“For me, Smith goes to four, there’s no doubt about that. That means either Green has to open or they go for a traditional opener,” Lehmann told the ABC.

The 25-year-old has made his name as a batter after a stress fracture affected his bowling during his teenage years. He has played 28 Tests for Australia with an average of 36 and taken 35 wickets at 35. Green earned a place in the squad with Steve Smith's promotion following David Warner’s retirement.
