Opining that the 2023 ODI World Cup will be Rohit Sharma‘s last as a captain, former India skipper Sourav Ganguly is hopeful that the current India skipper will be able to win the coveted title.

Rohit Sharma will be leading in an ODI World Cup for the first time in his career. He played in the last two editions as a player and enjoyed impressive campaigns in both of them. A lot is being expected from the opening batsman as fans desperately wait for Team India to end the long wait for the World Cup title.

And Sourav Ganguly believes Rohit Sharma has got what it takes to win a tournament such as the World Cup. The legendary captain highlighted Rohit Sharma’s impressive record as captain so far, stating that he has won two Asia Cups and five IPL as a captain.

Sourav Ganguly Opens Up On Rohit Sharma’s Leadership

“Very good captain. He has won the Asia Cup two times and has also won 5 IPLs. Outstanding captain. I think this will be his last World Cup as a captain. I hope he will win the trophy and finish successfully,” Sourav Ganguly told India Today.

Rohit Sharma-led India is one of the favorites to win the World Cup this year. They proved their title credentials by winning the Asia Cup last month in an emphatic manner where they registered stunning victories over fellow World Cup contenders Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Sourav Ganguly is keen to see Shubman Gill

The biggest names in the game will be in action during the World Cup. Players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Kane Williamson, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, and Babar Azam to name a few will be representing their respective teams. But as far as Sourav Ganguly is concerned, he is looking forward to seeing Shubman Gill in action.

The youngster is being tipped by many as the player to watch out for in the World Cup. The India opener is currently the highest run-scorer in ODIs this year. No player has scored more runs or centuries than him in the ODIs in 2023. Last month, he was the highest run-scorer in the Asia Cup and will be looking to replicate his performance in the World Cup.

“Many good players were there. But I am looking forward to watching Shubman Gill. He has played brilliantly. Jasprit Bumrah is also playing very well,” Sourav Ganguly said.

The ODI World Cup is getting underway on Thursday (October 5) with the match between New Zealand and England. India will open their campaign on Sunday (October 8) against Australia in Chennai.
