Former Indian fast bowler S Sreesanth expressed his astonishment at the outstanding performance of the Rohit Sharma-led team in the Asia Cup 2023 final against Sri Lanka. S Sreesanth compared the final to a practice game or cricket played at lower age levels.
The Men in Blue bowled out the opposition team for just 50 runs at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday, September 17. Mohammed Siraj was unplayable with the ball, picking up six wickets for 21 runs in his seven overs. Siraj took four wickets in a single over.
I Couldn’t Believe It – S Sreesanth
In an interview with Sportskeeda, S Sreesanth emphasized that nobody could have predicted an on-sided encounter, highlighting India’s dominant performances in the final game.
“I couldn’t believe it. It was just like a selection or practice match. You get to see such games at U3, U14, U16 levels. No Indian player or fan or anyone who was watching the Asia Cup could have predicted that something like this was going to happen. It was a complete clinical performance from the Indian team.”
He Didn’t Do Anything Extraordinary – S Sreesanth
The former Kerala cricketer praised Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah for their exceptional bowling partnership, highlighting the boost in team morale when bowlers perform well in the early overs.
“I think he (Siraj) picked his five wickets in 16 balls. No runs for three wickets! Thse things don’t happen even in Test matches. Hats off to him from nowhere to somewhere to everywhere,” Sreesanth further added.
“He didn’t do anything extraordinary. The team’s morale goes really high when you pick wickets in the initial overs and that’s exactly what Siraj and Bumrah did and that’s what is expected of them too by coach and captain.”
Siraj Made The Match Look Like A Highlights Package – S Sreesanth
Sreesanth was impressed with Mohammed Siraj’s commitment on the field and suggested that both young cricketers and legends of the game should take note of it.
“Siraj made the match look like a highlights package. The one thing that I found great was the way he chased the ball to the boundary when he himself was on a hattrick. The level of commitment that he showed is something both youngsters and legends of the game should take note of.”
Siraj will be next seen in action during the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia at home. While Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Hardik Pandya have been rested for the first two games, the bowlers have been retained for all three matches.
