Mumbai stalwart Amol Muzumdar has revealed how the the heartbreaking 2011 World Cup snub compelled Rohit Sharma to turn things around in his career.

The right-handed batsman made his debut for India in 2007 and was a part of the 2007 T20 World Cup winning team. He had also scored a fine fifty in the crucial game against South Africa before playing an important cameo in the final against Pakistan.

He did not really managed to cement his spot in the team but was still a regular in the ODI as well as the T20I teams. Rohit Sharma was widely expected to be a part of India’s squad for the 2011 World Cup at home but the team-management and the selectors decided otherwise. Following the snub, Rohit Sharma had famously expressed his disappointment on X (then Twitter) while also asking his followers the reason behind it.

Fast forward to 2023 and Rohit Sharma is now leading India in the ongoing 2023 World Cup. Incidentally, the ongoing competition is also being played in India and the captain has the opportunity to lay his hands on the coveted title.

‘Rohit Sharma upset after 2011 World Cup snub’:

As Rohit Sharma leads India in the 2023 World Cup, Amol Muzumdar has opined that the failure to make it to the squad for the 2011 World Cup really upset the star batsman. One of India’s most successful batsmen in domestic circuit, Muzumdar said that Rohit transformed his career after 2011 World Cup setback.

“According to me, when he wasn’t selected in that 2011 World Cup where the team happened to go and win the tournament, that really upset him. After that, he’s just been excellent. When he got the captaincy (in the IPL) later, it added responsibility on his shoulders, and he really matured.

“And he’s never looked back after that. That was one setback which he took positively and turned it around for himself,” Mazumdar said on Star Sports show, “Follow the Blues”.

Speaking further, Muzumdar heaped praise on Rohit’s captaincy methods, saying that the India captain does not complicate things for himself as well as the team.

“I want to highlight 3 things about his captaincy. The first one is that Rohit Sharma gives a lot of weightage and importance to data and statistics. The second one is, he keeps things very simple and tries to make his team members to think simple. He keeps everyone in the team in a very cool and calm atmosphere.

“And, the third one, which is the most important point, is that he has that magical touch in him. Whatever changes he makes, that comes out like a magical touch, like, for example, Mumbai Indians got that magical touch in their team after Rohit Sharma became their captain,” said Muzumdar.

Meanwhile, Rohit-led India have started their World Cup campaign with three wins in a row. They will be in action next on Thursday (October 19) when they take on Bangladesh in Pune.
