Jasprit Bumrah is reportedly set to be overlooked for any leadership role during the upcoming tour of England. Team India are scheduled to visit England for a five-match Test series, starting on June 20.

Jasprit Bumrah will be one of the most important members of Team India as the Rohit Sharma-led side will be eyeing a better performance in Tests after the dismal displays last season.

BCCI wants consistency in leadership

India suffered a crushing 3-0 loss against New Zealand at home before suffering a 3-1 defeat in Australia. The defeats also denied India a spot in the WTC final.

The series against England will kickstart the new WTC campaign for India and they will be keen to come up with a good performance. While India's fate in the series will depend a lot on how Jasprit Bumrah performs, the star pacer is unlikely to be given a leadership role.

No leadership role for Jasprit Bumrah:

During the tour of Australia last season, Jasprit Bumrah led India to a historic Test win in Perth and also led the team in the fifth Test. However, he is unlikely to be considered for a leadership role in England, according to a report in the Indian Express.

The report has stated that since Bumrah is unlikely to feature in all the five Tests as part of his workload management, the selectors are likely to seek a player who will play through the tour.

"We want a player who will be available for all five Test matches and he should be given the vice-captain’s role. Bumrah won’t be playing all five matches, so we don’t want to appoint different deputies for different games. It will be better that the captain and vice-captain should be certain and play all five Tests," the sources told the news outlet.

Shubman Gill's stocks rise

The report further stated that the selectors are trying to identify a young player who could be groomed as a future leader, as vice-captain. From the current set of players, Shubman Gill (25) and Rishabh Pant (27) are the frontrunners.

While Bumrah has also been backed by many to lead the Test side, his injury woes are a big concern. Earlier this year, he suffered a back injury during the Sydney Test and was sidelined for three months.

Even in the past, the star pacer remained on the sidelines for months due to injuries and it is one of the key reasons why the selectors are hesitating in giving him a leadership role.
