On Sunday, October 29, India will embark on their sixth match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, facing England in Lucknow, with an eye on reclaiming the top spot in the tournament’s points table. All eyes will be fixed on Rohit Sharma and his team as cricket enthusiasts eagerly anticipate how they will perform against the defending champions.

England, despite their somewhat lackluster performance so far in the tournament with just one win from five matches, cannot be underestimated. It’s worth noting that England was the only team to defeat India during the league stage of the 2019 World Cup.

Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian side in this important World Cup fixture, marking a significant milestone in his captaincy career. This match will be Rohit Sharma’s 100th appearance as the captain of the Indian cricket team.

Rohit Sharma’s 100th Match As Indian Captain

Rohit Sharma will join an exclusive group of Indian cricket captains who have achieved this significant milestone. At the pinnacle of this list stands MS Dhoni, who led the national team in a staggering 332 matches. Following Dhoni is Mohammed Azharuddin, a captain in three World Cups, who led in 221 matches. Next is Virat Kohli, who captained in 213 matches.

Sourav Ganguly, with 196 matches, Kapil Dev with 108 matches, and Rahul Dravid with 104 matches, occupy the next spots on this esteemed list. Rohit Sharma followed, and he was succeeded by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who captained India in 98 matches. During Tendulkar’s captaincy, India secured 27 victories while suffering 52 losses.

Rohit Sharma’s journey into captaincy began in 2017 when he was appointed as the vice-captain of the white-ball teams. He assumed leadership responsibilities in T20Is and ODIs when Virat Kohli was unavailable. In 2021, Rohit took on the full-time captaincy for ODIs and T20Is.

In December 2021, Rohit was named vice-captain of the Test team for the South Africa tour, although he was subsequently ruled out of the series due to injury. Shortly after the Test series, Virat Kohli stepped down from the captaincy. In February 2022, Rohit was appointed as the captain for all formats, and under his leadership, India has achieved remarkable success with 5 Test wins, 29 ODI victories, and 39 T20I triumphs.
