It was a decent outing for England on Day 1 of the 4th IND vs ENG Test match, as they were able to cross the 300-run mark courtesy of a hundred from Joe Root. Root brought up a well-deserved hundred and was finally able to break his string of low scores and now would be aiming to help England reach a big first-innings score. Indian pacer Akash Deep also impressed on his debut and picked up 3 wickets at the start of the English innings.

England’s openers, Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley put up 47 runs from 57 balls for the first wicket, giving them a respectable start. Akash Deep, making his debut, dismissed Duckett for 11 runs off of 21 balls. After being caught behind, Duckett gave wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel an easy catch. With the ball, Akash kept up his assault and threw Ollie Pope for a duck. Crawley was well set and eventually removed by the Bengal pacer for 42 runs off of 42 balls. While he was at the crease, he hit six fours and one six.

After losing the first three wickets for a score of 57 runs, England’s innings were brought back on track by Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow. The pair added 52 runs from 57 balls in quick time and tried to put the pressure back on the Indian bowlers. Bairstow was looking good and scored 38 runs from 35 balls, but wasn’t able to convert his start into a big score. Bairstow fell against Ravichandran Ashwin while sweeping the ball, whereas Ravindra Jadeja got rid of England captain Ben Stokes for 3 runs.

Joe Root kept hitting runs from the other end while the wickets kept falling from one end. Root scored a much-needed half-century with 108 balls. Root put up a decent stand with wicketkeeper-batsman Ben Foakes and added 113 runs from 261 balls for the 6th wicket. Foakes played an innings of 47 runs from 126 balls and gave decent support to Root. The English wicket-keeper was dismissed by Mohammed Siraj. Siraj also removed Tom Hartley for 13 runs from 26 balls with a beauty and recreated James Anderson’s dismissal of the 3rd Test match.

Currently, Joe Root has scored a stunning century of 219 balls, his first of the series. Root was one of the top batsmen to score the most runs against India in the series, but things turned out to be the contrary as he was dismissed cheaply in the first three games.

Joe Root, the current highest run scorer against India in Tests, was projected to score the most runs in the series. However, Root was dismissed for low scores and struggled to match the Indian spinners. There were occasions when the right-handed hitter attempted to play attacking strokes but was out cheaply because he failed to execute them.

Joe Root continued to attack along with Ollie Robinson and has already added 57 runs from 89 balls for the 8th wicket. At the end of the day, England ended at 302/7 in 90 overs, wherein Root was unbeaten on 106 runs from 226 balls with 9 fours, whereas, Robinson is playing on 31 runs from 60 balls, with 5 fours and 1 six.

Akash Deep was able to pick 3 wickets whereas Mohammed Siraj ended up with 2 wickets for India. Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin picked up 1 wicket each.
