England National Cricket Team star batsman Joe Root was left fuming at the third umpire Ahsan Raza after his LBW dismissal in the 29th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday, October 29.

Joe Root was expected to play a big role with the bat for the Three Lions in the ongoing edition of the World Cup. However, he has not lived up to the expectations, having played just a couple of good knocks for the side.

During the run-chase against India, he came to bat after the dismissal of Dawid Malan. He wasn’t able to do anything with the bat and was back in the dugout after bagging a golden duck. On the last ball of the 5th over, Bumrah bowled a full-length delivery around off and middle stump and the ball rapped on the pads of the batter.

The on-field umpire raised his finger and after a chat with Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root opted for a DRS. On the UltraEdge, it showed there was a little spike when the ball was near the bat, but the third umpire declared that there was no bat involved and he gave it out.

Root was unhappy with the decision and he was left fuming. Root was also seen complaining to the umpires on the field but was forced to walk back into the hut.

Overall, Root struggled in the powerplay overs since the ICC World Cup 2019. In 18 innings, he has scored just 50 runs at an average of 4.54 and a strike rate of 37.87. Also, he has been dismissed 11 times between 1-10 overs. Just like Kohli, Root was out for a golden duck in the ODI World Cup for the first time.

Earlier, England restricted India to a total of 229/9 on a tricky surface, and speaking during the mid-innings break, Chris Woakes said that they were happy to pick early wickets and put India under pressure. He elaborated:

“Nice to do well with the new ball. It was nice to get back in rhythm, we bowled in the right areas today. Picking up wickets is always nice, we put them under pressure early on. I missed my lengths earlier in the tournament, was a bit frustrating, but I hit the right areas today.

“The fielders backed up the bowlers and that set the tone for us. It’s two paced with the new ball. Hopefully the conditions get better under lights. It’s a good Indian side, hopefully we bat well and chase it down.”
