The 30-year-old Ireland National Cricket Team pacer Barry McCarthy expressed disappointment over his team’s loss against India National Cricket Team in the first T20I of the three-match series at the Malahide in Dublin on Friday, August 18.

Ireland lost the first T20I by 2 runs as per the DLS method and have gone down 0-1 in the series. Losing the toss and batting first, they were pushed on the backfoot by the returning pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna as well as leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi.

Ireland were struggling at 6-59 when Barry McCarthy joined forces with Curtis Campher to bail his side out of trouble. He added brilliant 57 runs in 44 balls with Campher.

After losing his partner, Barry McCarthy played an attacking brand of cricket and helped Ireland post 139/7 on the board. He registered his best score in T20Is of 51*. He scored those runs at a strike rate of 154.54 and his innings consisted of 4 fours and 4 sixes.

“It is always good to contribute to the team” – Barry McCarthy

Speaking after the match, Barry McCarthy said that he is happy to contribute to the team, but disappointed to finish on the losing side. Barry McCarthy elaborated:

“It is always good to contribute to the team, disappointed that we didn’t get a win. (On his partnership with Campher) We knew we had to get a good score on the board.

“We were enforcing ourselves and playing strong shots. In the second innings there was a little bit in the wicket. It’s important to take the game to the opposition. It’s always nice to contribute to the team.”

Chasing the target, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad added 46 runs for the opening partnership before the dismissal of Jaiswal and Tilak Varma on back-to-back deliveries. India were at 47/2 when rain interrupted the game and the match was called off. Jasprit Bumrah, who is the 11th player to captain India in T20Is and just the first bowler to do so, was awarded Player of the Match for his incredible performance.
