Virat Kohli, on Wednesday (June 5) failed to deliver with the bat as he was out for a single-digit score during India's T20 World Cup 2024 opener against Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

The former India skipper has come into the T20 World Cup after enjoying a stunning season with the bat in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024). The right-handed batsman finished the campaign as the highest run-scorer, scoring 741 runs with the help of one century and five half-centuries. He also created history by becoming the first-ever Indian batsman to finish an IPL season as the highest run-scorer twice.

After the IPL, Virat Kohli took an extended break and was not a part of the group that left the country for New York. He arrived in New York towards the end of the last month and also decided to skip the warm-up game against Bangladesh at the same venue.

The batting superstar had faced criticism from several quarters for not playing the warm-up game and he is facing the heat again after failing to do well with the bat against Ireland. With India chasing only 97 runs in the game, Virat Kohli was expected to start his campaign on a good note.

However, he could not last long and scored just 1 run off 5 balls before being dismissed by Mark Adair. And as the India star was out for a single-digit score, a number of fans decided to take shots at him.

Here are some of the reactions to Virat Kohli's failure:

Talking about the game, India were on 43 for 1 after 7 overs at the time of writing this report. Earlier in the game, Ireland were bowled out for just 96 runs in 16 overs after Rohit Sharma won the toss and invited them to bat first.

Allrounder Hardik Pandya starred with the bat, taking 3 wickets for 27 runs while Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah picked up 2 wickets each. For Ireland, Gareth Delany was the top-scorer, scoring 26 runs.
