India's dominating display against Ireland in their first game of the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 turned a bit sour due to an injury suffered by their captain Rohit Sharma.

India's decision to bowl first was completely justified by their bowlers as they bowled out Ireland for a paltry total of 96 runs in 16 overs. Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh impressed with the new ball again as he dismissed Paul Stirling and Andrew Balbirnie in the third over to put India in the driver's seat.

Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah then joined the party as well by taking three and two wickets respectively. Ireland kept losing wickets at regular intervals and never really looked in contention to post a challenging total. At one stage, they were languishing at 50 for 8 before a 26-run knock from Gareth Delaney gave some respectability to the scoreboard.

In reply, India chased down the total in less than 13 overs and by losing only two wickets. In-form Virat Kohli failed to deliver with the bat and was out for just 1 run off 5 balls. However, Rohit Sharma did not let Ireland capitalize on the early breakthrough as he led India's charge with the bat by scoring a fine fifty.

He scored 52 runs off 37 balls with the help of four fours and three sixes before retiring hurt. Suryakumar Yadav then departed for 2 before Rishabh Pant (36*) and Shivam Dube took India home.

India's impressive 8-wicket win was overshadowed by the injury suffered by Rohit Sharma. The right-handed batsman suffered the injury in the ninth over while facing left-arm pacer Joshua Little.

On the second ball of the over, the India opener shuffled across and tried to play a scoop shot. However, he could not make any contact with the ball and the ball went on to hit him near the shoulder. The blow did not look serious at that time as Rohit continued to bat and hit the next two deliveries for back-to-back sixes.

However, he decided to walk off the field after the tenth over when India needed only 21 runs. India would be hoping that the injury is not serious and Rohit's decision to leave the field was just a precautionary measure.
