Former New Zealand pacer Simon Doull has picked two turning points during the game between India and New Zealand that tilted the game in the hosts’ favour. The top two teams in the ongoing World Cup locked horns against each other at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on Sunday (October 22).
India beat New Zealand by 4 wickets to register their fifth win in as many games in the ongoing competition. On the other hand, New Zealand’s winning run came to an end. The Black Caps also lost a game against India in an ICC event for the first time since 2003.
Asked to bat first, New Zealand scored 273 runs in 50 overs thanks to a century from Daryl Mitchell and a fifty from Rachin Ravindra. In reply, India chased down the total with two overs remaining. Batting superstar Virat Kohli led the charge with the bat for the home side, scoring 95 runs before being dismissed when the team needed only 5 runs.
Simon Doull’s turning point of the game:
Speaking after the game, Simon Doull picked not one but two turning points in the game. He first picked India’s bowling performance in the last ten overs where they conceded only 54 runs and picked up 6 wickets. A brilliant 159-run stand between Ravindra and Mitchell had set the platform for a big score but India’s bowlers made a fine comeback,
“I am gonna take two turning points. The last ten overs of the bowling innings from India was superb – 54 runs and 6 wickets. They really stopped New Zealand from anything around that 300-320 mark which they should have scored,” Simon Doull told Star Sports.
Speaking further, he picked Glenn Phillips’ dismissal as another turning point. Phillips was dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav for 23. The former cricketer-turned-commentator stated that the dismissal stopped New Zealand from reaching the 300-run mark.
“And then when New Zealand batted, I felt the turning point was Glenn Phillips’ wicket. Rohit Sharma, I could just see him screaming, ‘mine, mine, mine’. And he took that catch and just broke that partnership which could have been a partnership that took New Zealand to that 300-310 score,” said Simon Doull.
