In a recent development, pacer Tim Southee has stepped down as the captain of the New Zealand Test team after struggling to perform. Tim Southee's resignation comes ahead of New Zealand's upcoming Test series against India, and opening batter Tom Latham will take up the role full-time.
The 35-year-old pacer took over the charge of the New Zealand Test team from Kane Williamson in December 2022. Southee has led the national cricket team in 14 Tests, winning and losing six each. The Black Caps suffered a 0-2 series defeat against Australia and Sri Lanka under his captaincy.
The veteran bowler struggled during New Zealand's home summer, where he took six wickets at an average of over 70 against a second-string South Africa and Australia. He has played in 102 Tests and taken 382 wickets, making him the team's second-highest wicket-taker behind Sir Richard Hadlee.
Tim Southee steps down as New Zealand Test Captain
“Captaining the BLACKCAPS in a format that’s so special to me, has been an absolute honor and a privilege. I’ve always tried to put the team first throughout my career and I believe this decision is the best for the team,” Tim Southee said.
“I believe the way I can best serve the team moving forward is focusing on my performances on the field and getting back to my best, to continue taking wickets and helping New Zealand win Test matches."
“I will, as I’ve always done, continue to support my teammates, especially the exciting young bowlers making their way on the international stage. I wish Tom all the best in the role and he knows I’ll be there to support him on his journey, as he has done for me over the years,” he added.
Tom Latham is considered one of the most successful Test openers of his time. He has taken on the role of captain for New Zealand in nine Tests, winning four and losing five. The left-handed batter has played 82 Test matches and scored 5,519 runs at an average of 39.42, including 13 centuries.
Fantastic Player And A Very Good Leader - Gary Stead
Black Caps coach Gary Stead praised Tim Southee for his humility and significant contributions to New Zealand cricket throughout his nearly 17-year international career. Stead said that stepping down as Test captain was a difficult decision for Southee, but he made it with the team's best interests in mind.
"Tim’s a fantastic player and a very good leader who is held in high regard by the players and support staff. He’s been a great servant of New Zealand Cricket over nearly 17 years playing on the international stage, and I’d like to acknowledge his humility in stepping down from the role of Test captain. It’s not easy giving up something you love, but Tim is a true team man and he’s made the decision with the team’s best interests at heart."
